I read this after an emphatically positive review by a complete stranger in a small branch of Waterstones. i am so glad that I took notice of this prophet. Having found Iain Banks' fiction difficult to read and difficult to empathise with I discovered that Iain M Banks writes wholly differently. His plots are huge, his characters engaging and the style of writing is much mnore accessible. I quite liked it, even though I didn't really expect to. It is aimed at a younger set than The Hunger Games. Gregor is eleven, and that's about the right age for reading this book, give or take a couple of years. It's not really dark like The Hunger Games, but there are battles and giant rats and a quest from which we are told from the start only eight of twelve questers return. If your kid can cry a little at a sad part and then get on with the rest of the book, she's old enough to read it. Collins doesn't make the mistake with Gregor that Riordan did with Percy Jackson--doesn't try too hard to make Gregor sound "like a kid". Gregor is natural and unforced. I hope the rest of the series holds up.

A fun summer read, though I almost gave up in the beginning, because "Match.com"-esque plot was a little awkward. However, once the lead gets to Maine and starts making friends, the story really took off. In the end, I wanted to know more about what she would do next and wished that the author had cut 20 pages off the front of the book to give me that story instead.

I didn't really like this book. Blue Moon was better. In fact, I was really annoyed with Ever (like, really get annoyed); what with her stupidity and selfishness. There was also little on Damen >< Somehow, I agree with Romy and Rayne about Damen and Ever.
