Police are baffled by the disappearance of Morwenna Bloom, age fourteen who vanished after walking in Hangman’s Wood yesterday evening, seemingly without a trace.” These words were written on a paper dated June 22nd, just over fifty years ago,Tanya, a 13 year old girl, found the paper between two pages of a book in her grandmothers mansion at Trickey End, she is not so joyous to be in that place. Tanya isn’t like any other ordinary 13 year old girl, Tanya can see fairies, something that is called the second sight. She doesn’t tell anyone of her special sight because no one would believe her. Her mother accuses it “this attention seeking of yours,” and Tanya doesn’t appreciate her gift either. Now because of curious Fabian, the son of Tanya’s grandmother’s gardener Warwick, he and Tanya are cracking the case behind Morwenna Bloom’s disappearance. On the way Tanya learns more about the fairies she sees and her grandmother. But, is Morwenna Bloom as innocent as Tanya thought she would be? 13 Treasures is an adventurous mystery with a twist of fantasy. Although it is slow paced, Michelle Harrison does a explosive job on making the visual imagery,characters and dialogue seem real. The characters are all different: there is the person who doesn’t want to do anything who leads to the conflict, there’s the person who is adventurous but sometimes doesn’t make very good decisions, and there’s the person who is not who they say they are. This book was a fun read. Michelle Harrison took fairies, something you wouldn’t even consider of every day, and turned them into something as real as something you could witness them every day, just like Tanya would. I also love the fact that Michelle Harrison did research on fairy lore. However, there was not much character development as I would have expected or enjoyed. Tanya always seemed to stay the same person. I would recommend this book to mostly girls ages 12-15 and to people who enjoy Mary Downing Hahn, because like most of her books this one discusses a foggy disappearance of a young girl. Except unlike Mary Downing Hahn, the characters were more exciting and colorful. I would also recommend 13 Treasures to people who like adventuring into the woods and fairies who are not even close to being like Tinkerbell. - Olivia Quinci

Winner of the 1998 Booker Prize, this is about three men whose connection together is that they are all former lovers of Molly Lane, who has just passed away at the beginning of the novel. They are all prominent within their careers...one is a successful modern composer, one is the editor of a paper and one is a foreign secretary. Upon her death, a chain of events occurs as inappropriate photos she took of the foreign secretary surface. All three of these men's lives are forever altered as friendships are tested, and the foreign secretary must fight for his political life. As with all his other books, this one is very well written, the author is very talented at letting you get into his character's heads. However, I was a little unconvinced by the events at the end of the novel, which I won't give away. I'm not sure the buildup would necessarily lead to the conclusion.
