Obviously I will be journeying through this for a long time. I had been using the Devotional Bible by Max Lucado, but prefer this edition. I like the footnotes, explaining the historical context in which it was written, who it was intended for and why. It helps me to put it into a framework for my life. Reading concurrently with the "Don't Know Much..." text, which attempts to put some of the same information as the footnoting in a very colloquial style. Amusing and informative, maybe a little irreverant at times.

What's great about this book isn't just the way in which it zeroes in microscopically on many of the events in America that took place in 1968, but how the author looks at events that were going on around the world at that time. A nice global viewpoint---and now I know something about Polish history in the 1960's.

This debut novel follows 12 year-old Alice as she struggles to understand all that is happening in her family. Her mother is bedridden, her successful older sister has eloped with a rodeo cowboy and her father is struggling to keep their horse ranch afloat. The story takes place in Desert Valley, Co from spring to early fall. Alice becomes obsessed with a classmate who had drown, a teacher who she thinks she is in love with, and trying not to become friends with a rich girl taking riding lessons from her father. The story is very believable and sad in many ways as the reader really sees how life appears from a 12 years eyes and how adults can really have an impact on a child with actions that may not be in their best interest.
