I adored Anna and the French Kiss, and had high hopes for this book. And there's a lot to like: Lola's dads, Cricket Bell, Lola's best friend Lindsey, cameos by Anna and St. Clair. But Lola herself was a little frustrating. She acts out a lot. She's self-centered and is stupid about boys and treats good people badly. She's a very believable teen — too believable, ultimately, to be fully likeable. Her family issues were interesting and sympathetic, and I really liked how they were handled, but I spent too much of the book waiting for her to snap out of it already.

3.5 stars Debut Dr Margaret (Maggie) Levine's radio talk show Live with Levine has been a hit since she started the show nine months ago and now she's the most popular radio personality in Chicago. For the thirty-three year-old psychiatrist it's been a slow recovery from the emotional, psychological and physical trauma of a stalker's attack a year ago. After one of Maggie's regular callers - 'Owen' - becomes agitated and threatening one evening during her show, she arrives home to find her house has been vandalised with the word 'fear' written in blood on her walls. Maggie is a target again. The Society for the Study of the Aberrant Mind - SSAM - is a successful private business to catch serial murderers and violent offenders. Because Maggie is a long-time friend of the founder, SSAM takes on Maggie's case. Ethan Townsend, thirty-eight year-old ex-Secret Service agent is in charge of protecting Maggie and securing her house. What becomes apparent fairly quickly is that 'Owen' is using the same m.o. as 'Fearmonger', a serial killer who has been in hiding for over a decade. This was a pretty satisfying read. The prose, pacing and plot were really good. The hero and heroine were likable and well-described with good detail on their backgrounds. The motivations of the killer were believable. There were a couple of issues though. I thought that SSAM may have been encroaching too much on the police's turf. I think that the police/FBI would have been leading the investigation and maybe using SSAM as consultants. It seemed to be the other way around with SSAM leading the investigation. A couple of times Maggie did tend to do something that seemed a bit unlikely for a woman who had been attacked by a stalker previously and now had a serial killer after her. Plus it was just a little too easy for the killer to eventually get his hands on Maggie. This appears to be a first novel from author Anne Marie Becker. Only Fear is pretty good romantic suspense overall and I like the concept of SSAM bringing together experts from different fields. I look forward to reading the next in the series. Another excellent biography of George Balanchine. I like this one because Teachout, a drama critic for The Wall Street Journal, breaks down his choreography and finds meaning in much of his patterns of movement. Pretty cool.

This book was alright to read for being a completion of short stories. All of the concepts of the short stories did correlate with each other and was not just in some random order. The one thing I did not like about Lahiri's book was it seemed like when I was just starting to get involved with in one of the short stories and start to get to know the characters, the story just came to a sudden halt. All-in-all I would have to say that this was a alright book to read, it was kind of hard for me to get into these short stories but they were well written.

I only picked it up because my 3rd grader/ Harry Potter fan, wanted to read it due to the connection of Nicolas Flamel. So I skimmed it before letting her read it, and found it tame enough for her, but nothing that I can rave about from an adult perspective. SHE on the otherhand loved it, wants the rest of the 6 book series and has been researching Nicolas Flamel on Wikipedia. So, good for young readers into fantasy, but not necessary for adults looking for a good read.

I really enjoyed this book. For the genre, I thought it was really good. Not great literature, but a fun, engaging read.

This one only gets 3 stars but in general Christopher Brookmyre books are clever, over the top action packed thrillers. He is an author that has a habit of making me laugh out loud which I rarely do when reading.

This book is the sequal to Iron Lace. I started this one back in August, and didn't get very far before school started, and I put it aside. I picked it up again as I was headed out the door to a dental appointment, started reading it again, and had a hard time putting it down this time. Iron Lace was a good read, and it stood on its own well without reading this sequel. But talk about opening a can of worms... However, this one wouldn't stand well on its own. These two books are about a powerful, rich white family in New Orleans during the time of early Civil Rights awareness. The matriarch kept many secrets from her family, and upon her death, she had her lawyer reveal the painful truth.

Fun look at life for a girl growing up in the counterculture of the 1970s on the (pre-gentrification)Upper West Side of Manhattan. Funny in many parts, including the wedding ("poufy white dress") gown shopping, which I can relate to as it brings up all sorts of questions about who I am and what I want in life.
