This is the first thing by Bukowski that I read, so naturally it's still my favorite. (in the spirit of full-disclosure, there's also a chapter almost entirely devoted to redheads that I am somewhat biased towards.) I rarely take a book of poetry and sit down and read it front to back, but that's exactly what I did with this. These poems of mishaps with women are as complete as any short story, each page building upon this complex and alluring figure that is Charles Bukowski. yes, it's a lot of fucking and a lot of drinking, but if you think you're above that, you're fooling yourself.

Marian Keyes stands out in Women's Fiction because of her ability to capture the elusive characteristics that make emotionally clumsy but good hearted women interesting. In other hands, this sort of material (single girls, job woes, family problems) comes off as either stupid or a Bridget Jones rip-off. Somehow, Keyes rises above all that and crafts characters that are interesting, likeable, and often clever -- even when they're doing very silly things. I usually like her... and I don't normally like this sort of thing, so that should tell you something.

More useful than 1,000 writing workshops. (I do not exaggerate.)

good, but took far too long to get to the point.

A fantastic book to have on hand for those times when you can't quite remember how you should address that old lady who might or might not be divorced at your next formal dinner party.

Collection of roadside attraction buildings like giant elephant buildings and bathrooms shaped like shoes, etc. More information than your average picture book.

I just finished this one...it's a short book about a woman's journey for Peace. She walked more than 25,000 miles on a personal pilgrimage for peace. She vowed to "remain a wanderer until mankind has learned the way of peace, walking until given shelter and fasting until given food." In the course of her 28 year pilgrimage she touched the hearts, minds, and lives of thousands of individuals all across North America. Her message was both simple and profound. It continues to inspire people all over the world: "This is the way of peace: overcome evil with good, and falsehood with truth, and hatred with love." It's so simple and yet, we manage to do just the opposite everyday...We repay evil with vengence and violence...we lie, cheat and steal...and we harbor resentment and anger. Haven't we learned that these things get us no where?? I hope that we can all find inner peace and in the process, peace within our communities and throughout the world. Don't give up hope.

Good to great book... I'd have to give it a proper reread before I can tell. Weirdly moving, absurd imagery abounds.

Dorothy Parker... what to say? She's witty, she's smart, she attempted to kill herself three times and failed all three - if that doesn't get you interested, nothing will.

Well the Kardashians look good but unfortunately don't write as well as they accessorize. I loved having a "fluff" book to do some mindless reading though. Enjoyed the tale of their creation and also all the fabulous pictures. Will look great on my book shelve with the hot pink sleeve. :) Now its on to more intense and intellectual reads.
