This book was heading for a five star rating, but there's a rather long chunk towards the end which dragged towards three starts. A little editing, and this would have been brilliant . . . The part of the book that works is the "diary" of Octavian, a young black man, written just before and during the American revolution. Octavian grows up in a bizarre household, unaware that he his a slave owned by a scientific society and that his entire life is in fact their science project. Anderson writes in a pseudo-victorian style, which he does very well, and allows him to push both the content and style over the edge and yet still work in a gothic- bohemian tradition. Although the entire book is "realistic fiction," there is a tint of magical realism about the entire thing; there are no "magical" events to point to, but the phantasmagorical household and cruelly logical scientists have the shape of the grotesque. The themes of the book -- identity, racism, prejudice and hatred disguised as logic -- are writ large and unsubtle, but work, both because YA is forgiving when it comes to thematic over-indulgence and the psuedo-victorian allows for excess. Octavian's voice is tragic and moving, and Anderson perfectly allows him to slowly grow into the realization of the lies that have been woven about his entire existence. When Anderson occasionally slips in a bit of graphic violence, its shock is truly shocking. So why Anderson feel that he needs to change point of view and spend (what feels like) an endless chunk of the book told through epistles written home by a dopey revolutionary soldier is a mystery. Throughout the text Anderson occasionally inserts one or two page textual digressions -- an advertisement for the capture of a run away slave, a letter from the head of the scientific society to his financial backers -- and these short interruptions add to the depth of the world and provide welcome diversity of voice. But he picks the most annoying of these other voices, Captain Goring, to monopolize a good quarter of the novel; after ten pages or so I started flipping forward to see how much longer I'd have to suffer through his boring prose, and it went on, and and on and on. Had I not loved the first 3/4 and found that the book did get back to Ocvatian's diaries, I probably would have stopped reading the book. Still, even with this huge, gaping flaw, the parts that work work so well that I loved the book and will definitely read the sequel.

Oh my........!!!! Review: I waited so long to read a book by Elkeles. If you haven't read Perfect Chemistry...don't wait! This book is addicting and one of my new favorite books! I instantly connected with both Alex and Brittany. My, were they some interesting characters. I think that I loved both of them. Alex definitely managed to make my heart melt. Both of their characters were complex, and by complex I mean very complex. Brittany and Alex are caring, sweet people and every time they were together and just had to root for them and their romance. Speaking of romance, did someone just turn up the hot-o-meter! Whew, Elkeles has set my standard high for romance. I could handle insta-love before but now I'm going to be comparing every couple to Alex and Brittany's literal Perfect Chemistry. Everything about their relationship was so real and so raw. I really loved it. Perfect Chemistry has this addictive air about it. All I could think about was reading it, when I wasn't reading it! It takes me awhile to finish books these days but this one I polished off in no time. I just felt compelled to read it. There is no way that I couldn't continue this series. I'm hoping that the next two books are just as awesome as the first. Elkeles is on the fast track to being one of my favorite authors, and Alex and Brittany one of my favorite couples. Let's just see how the other Fuentes brothers compare! Note: I'm absolutely hate this cover. I'm not a fan of...covers like this. Would you really want to go out in public with this?! I did because it was just so dang addictive! Rating: Way more than 5 stars!
