Absolutely loved it. I'm really unsure of a grading because it is based on a true story but has buddhism threaded through it which I found obvious but it concerned me. I would really hope it would be graded as a L-B1 but it's unlikely we will ever know as it's a 1st time English author who by the nature of his beautiful writing is unlikely to be a massive best seller.

I was enamored with this novel...for these first 100 pages or so. Then suddenly, Sarah's harrowing story took a backseat to Julia. Julia is some woman whose story does indeed overlap with Sarah's but it literally has no purpose. It all seemed too contrived to me. If you set out to write a novel about part of the Holocaust that most people know nothing of, then DO IT! Don't give enough details to get your audience hooked and then suddenly drop the riveting part of the novel for a flat character with a deep NEED to feel anything besides the passionate but hollow sex she has with her cheater of a husband! On that note, the relationship between Julia and her husband was completely and totally unbelievable.Excuse me but WHAT woman do you know who knows her husband has a mistress and is just like "meh..." about the whole thing? Even if Julia was in a state of limbo about her marriage and was unsure if she loved him or the idea of him, any woman I know would be completely devastated by the fact that their husband went elsewhere for sexual fulfillment. And also...that douchebag of a husband telling her, no ORDERING her to get an abortion after several miscarriages. Ha! ha ha ha ha...so laughable its disgusting. I wanted to care about these "problems" Julia was having, but she was just so passive about it all. Sarah became her obsession and yet, there were barely any details about Sarah once she discovered her story. Clearly, the most riveting and raw parts of this novel were the times in the Concentration camps, the harrowing run away tale and being cared for by two infinitely sweet, brave elderly people. I WANTED that story. What I got was a bunch of fluff about French families and seemingly suspenseful and twisted family history that played like a tired sitcom. Sarah's ultimate ending was so anticlimactic and unfeeling, I was stunned. All I could do was sit there and think, "really?" This book could have been so much. But in the end, it just wasn't.

The reason I fell in love with poetry. His imagery and the power and flow of his words humble me. Recordings of his poetry readings with that baritone are awe inspiring (check your local library) - a bard for all ages. he can turn language into music just using the sound and imagery of his words.

I finally finished reading this book after the library removed it from the 7-day loan category. I really enjoyed it: the Second World War seemed much fresher and more immediate than anything I've read about that time. The author was able to portray both the conqueror and the conquered more sympathetically because she did not have the benefit of hindsight (sadly). It must have caused some soul-searching in France. Many people in the novel behaved less than nobly, particularly in the flight from Paris, still there were a few heroic characters, enough to make you feel that the author had not given up on human beings.

A bit dry, but a reasonable review of judgment from a Brunswickian perspective. The target audience is empirical psychologists/cognitive scientists, and uses a fair amount of jargon. There are other books that are better introductions to the field for non-specialists.

Even though this book is really big, I really enjoyed it. So much so that I bought a copy at the library sale for 50 cents! I have read this book at least four or five times over the years. It's a romance, set in San Francisco during the gold rush. Lots of fires, there's a casino, and a cat.
