i was in a pirate mood when we went down to key west this weekend, so this seemed like a good choice. it certainly is a classic, and good fun. though perhaps the most interesting part is the appendix in which the author explains how he plagiarized various elements of the story from other books (the parrot from robinson crusoe, the skeleton from poe, etc.) very entertaining.

Years ago i read a book about gerald and sara murphy that i enjoyed so much that i recommended it to my book club. Many members still recall that book as their all time favorite. The name of the book escapes me- something like When We were so young. Anyway, this book is very similar and just as enjoyable. It is a fictionalized account of earnest hemingway's first marriage. It feels very well researched and evocative of the ambiance of paris between the wars. You get a sense of the impetus for some of hemingway's works.

This book is part fiction, part reality. Set in a Scottish hospital during WWI, the story revolves around real life doctor Capt. Rivers and the soldier patients he deals with (including poets Wilfred Owen and Sigfried Sassoon). It's an interesting psychological look at the effects of war on soldiers. My favorite aspect of the book was the focus on poetry: how Wilfred Owen worked and reworked his poems under Sassoon's tutelage, how war is too great an experience to completely exorcise completely. The book was turned into a movie well worth watching. Jonathan Price, who plays Rivers, is brilliant.

"The Rule of Four" is an intriguing story similar to "Da Vinci Code" and "Angels & Demons". The puzzles the characters solve are challenging and thought provoking. I really wish these authors would come out with something else. I thoroughly enjoyed this an recommend it all the time.

Definitely not my favorite Kathy Love book...... and I love her books. Not bad, but not great by any means.

Marlowe is obviously good, and his influence undeniable. But reading his poems - you get the feeling he would struggle to really be one to eclipse Shakespeare. He may even been more intelectual, and his humor a little more british, but he just haven't all those momments of brillance. I suppose his dimisse was an act of literary genius. Also, meh, It is hard to image him and Shakespeare being the same writer.

I'm not sure what to say about this book, it was different than anything I've read and it was a very bitter portrait, though sharply funny at times. I'm going to go back and read Elaine Showalter's take on it.
Give this to your mother.
