In The Son of Shinar, Hambleton picks up the story where he left off in The Last Aliyah and takes the reader on a fast-paced ride that does not disappoint. While many sequels are less fulfilling, that can certainly not be said of The Son of Shinar. The book opens with all the children and believers in Yeshua having vanished from Earth leaving the rest of mankind to ponder where they went and why. The Guardians have given their explanation and laid the groundwork for the coming time of trouble and the rise of the anti-Christ. Hambleton does an excellent job of translating the various prophetic images of the end times into a captivating story that keeps the reader on the edge of his seat waiting to see what the next page brings. Hambleton is an excellent student of eschatology and prophecy and has a talent for translating this knowledge into a tale that is both riveting and easy to read. His wonderfully crafted characters bring the whole thing to life. Once again, the reader is left anxious to read the next installment. An excellent book and series.

This series is getting better and better, now that I'm almost through it. The characters have evolved and the story is more interesting. I still find the obsessive relationship stuff annoying, but there's less and less of it.

This book was written to scare us or at least make us aware of our society's vulnerability to attack by unexpected tactics and our ignoring warnings of our vulnerability. If the author was a better writer, I might get this message better. But he is a hack writer and the characters are so flat. I am not drawn in to the story. Wading through for a book club read.

It is amazing (5 stars)but NOT because it was well-written. It is overly melodramatic, and the style is quite dated. However, as a piece of American history, it is a must-read for every citizen. It was the best-selling English language novel of the 19th century and Abe Lincoln said it triggered the War. In addition, I learned that the Uncle Tom of the title was a young, virile man who bravely stood up to his evil owner. The story of how the term "Uncle Tom" morphed into a insult; meaning a weak, obsequious, Stockholm syndrome-type slave is an indictment of 20th century literary deconstructionism. This book will never be taught in our current public school environment because of two things: the use of the "n-word", despite it being appropriate to the time and place (see Huck Finn,) and its unabashed evangelical Christian point of view.

We were reading a chapter a day, and every was loving it....saying it was so funny and such. Then last week the two older boys (ages 11 and 10) said they felt it was too "baby" and could we PLEASE stop reading it. The younger two (ages 7 and 5) won't hear of stopping the book so we are now having Uncle Wiggily Wednesday and will read one chapter each Wednesday. The stories are quaint, with a moral lesson. They do start sounding the same after a bit so it's probably a good idea to spread them out some. You can definitely tell it was written 'back in the day'. Updated February 2013 - We're done! We stopped reading for a while but finally picked it up again and finished. The youngest two (now 9 and 6) told me they want to keep the book forever and asked me to read their future kids stories from it when they came over to visit. The older boys (both 12) stopped listening a long time ago.
