When I purchased this book I had no idea that it's main focus and story line deals with something our family has lived with for 24 years. The technical descriptions are fairly detailed and, for the most part, very accurate. Many of the emotions were skillfully articulated. It is rare and refreshing to read a novel that doesn't manage to work in something about a sexual relationship. This was a pleasant reward. I struggled with some of the dialogue. Many of the comments made by the 7 year old girl were uncharacteristically mature. I would be deeply embedded in the storyline, living it as I read, when these adult responses (requiring some thought processing that is highly unrealistic of a seven year old) came out of this child's mouth and suddenly I was whisked back to the reality that this story is all made up. It's the first time I've experienced this type of distraction to a good read. There were a few other things in the story that were so contrived and sensational that I was unable to find it possible in reality. On the whole it was a good read that I could recommend to anyone.

This is book presents a fascinating insight to the moral motivation for studying linguistics, specifically discourse in its social setting. Everyone speaks multiple "social langauges" that they use in many different situations. These langauges and word choice reveal our values and belief about the world and our society. These beliefs are typically tacit and difficult to explain. However, when these biases cause harm to anyone and/or put one group at an advantage to another we have the moral obligation to understand these tacit belief and make them explicit....there's a lot more I could write, but what's the point. If you are interested in talking about it give me a call.

I have passed up reading this series for a long time, mainly because of it's similarities to the whole Twilight saga...(or so I thought) I ended up being pleasantly surprised! This was an extremely entertaining book. It had enough suspense and humour to keep it from ever getting too cheesy; although it definitely headed in that direction at times. I WAS happy that, unlike Twilight, there wasn't an overkill of building sexual tension...they just got it done with straight away, lol. It was nice to have it actually tap into the adult arena (I felt so jipped by the Twilight "straight-and-narrowness") However, it almost became redundant after awhile with all the sex scenes. You can only say so much when it comes to nookie- it's bound to get old when they're doing it like rabbits at every turn! Apart from that I really liked this story. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. I'm almost afraid to watch the HBO show incase it isn't quite as good.

A beautiful picture book that explains the idea of "good karma" in a way that children can understand. Gorgeous watercolor illustrations on wood complement the "soft" feel of the story. Would also work well in a "World Religions" class as a discussion springboard for Buddhism.
Raven Kendick is a bastard, for she was born out of wedlock (but no one knows)so she plans on marring for a title instead of love because she doesn't want to follow in her mothers footprints, but when she is kidnapped on the day of her wedding by a suitor who is completely out of his mind and wakes up to find herself in his brothers club then she knows that there is no way to save her reputation...unless she marries Kell Lasseter the man who saves her life. Kell Lasseter never thought his little brother would ever hurt a women let alone one who is as beautiful as Raven and when he is forced to save her he never thought that he will resort to asking for her hand in marriage. Now the two have to learn to live with what has been given to them and when Kell's brother threatens both of their lives will this destory them or make them stronger?

The reason Emily and Einstein caught my eye is because I’ve enjoyed Linda Francis Lee’s books in the past and the cover has a dog on it. Also the idea of one of the characters finding redemption and being reincarnated in a dog to right the wrongs he’s done to his faithful and loving wife has great appeal. I thought this would be a tender reflection from the male protagonist with great character study and a bit of a romance. But this book fails for me because I couldn’t stand the two main characters. They have nothing to recommend for themselves. Emily and Einstein is somewhat cruel in its telling and has a major lack of heart I was hoping for. Sandy Portman is ready to tell his wife, Emily he wants a divorce. Before he can, he’s hit by a car and dies. He wants a second chance because he feels he still has a life worth living. He’s given this second chance by his soul being placed into a stray dog. Coincidentally, his widow adopts him and names him Einstein. Sandy can’t believe he’s in this mongrel and must witness Emily’s breakdown he’s responsible for. She finds out how deceitful he was by cheating on her throughout their marriage, leaving her to be a victim to his mother who never liked her to begin with and wanting to take away the home Emily created that Sandy never put in her name in his will. Now Emily may end up homeless and lose her job. But then a hunky neighbor appears suddenly to lend support and is the total opposite of Sandy in every way. Sandy has to figure out how to help Emily find joy in her life again and forgive him before he can move on himself. It’s such a shame Linda couldn’t have created better characters with Sandy and Emily. Sandy is horrible, plain and simple. He’s selfish, egotistical and he doesn’t change at all during the course of the story, even as Einstein the dog. (He may have, but I decided not to finish the book). Emily isn’t much better. I understand her hurt and depression because of what Sandy has done to her, but her actions have left much to be desired. I feel when someone loses their partner due to death, they should have a mourning period before they move on and date or attach themselves to the next person they want sexually. Emily ends up making out with the hunky, blue collar neighbor soon after Sandy’s death. Now I know she’s in pain from finding out what a jerk Sandy was, but climbing all over your neighbor for some sort of comfort doesn’t garner my sympathy. And why did Linda have to make all the other characters as cold and calculating individuals? Just to make Emily suffer more for the sole purpose to find the inner strength to rise above her problems? Making caricatures of these characters, who I expected to twirl their mustaches and throw Emily under a train turned me completely off. With enough books written, you’d think this one would be a winner from Linda. It wasn’t, and Emily and Einstein was a big disappointment that left me unable to finish.

My copy is an ordinary paperback, from Del Ray books. It contains one Sector General story, and one that was originally a Sector General, but was denatured at the request of an editor. Most of the other stories are from the 1950s, but wear well

I really liked this book, but it's not something I would be able to read a second time. I knew it was going to be a gruesome book and expected that, but it was so hard to get through since each murder was so detailed. Bret Easton Ellis is an excellent writer, I would like to read some of his other novels.
