Two plots in one here. First, the main character is prosecuting a case against two college students accused of raping a stripper. Second, the main character is also trying to piece together the events surrounding his sister's death at a summer camp years ago. The action comes fast in this book, making it hard to put down.

Bittersweet beautiful. Intense war memories, but not too graphic, and the narrator doesn't want to remember them, so they don't last long. Captures the truth that war is poison that turns men into monsters. The antidote is family and stability.

3 1/2 stars, really. Well-written (obviously, it's Styron), poignant, and very 'relatable to'. I just wished it were longer. It's rare to get such a sincere yet literary account of depression, I think, and I felt there was a lot more he could have said.

I saw the movie first-(great performances by Jack Black, Samantha Morton, Dennis Hopper)--and I have to say this is one of those rare times where one doesn't ruin the other. I reccomend both. I acutally think they accompany eachother nicely because as a novella, its hard to see where the stories converge, whereas watching a film is naturally a more linear process. Anyways--very well written, pretty meaningful, and def. has staying power in my memory. "He'd wasted his entire life. Such people were very dear to us who'd only wasted a few years."

very interesting book about forms of popular resistance at three points in chinese history. in particular, his analysis of the taiping rebellion and taiwanese popular religion are very interesting in light of the ideas of saturation and precipitation he puts forth. the tiananmen chapter feels a bit of a stretch from the conceptual framework he sets up, but sparks some interesting thought nonetheless.
