Obviously not the "best" crime thriller ever written, as a lot of the hype would have you think. BUT, if you go into this one with an open mind, wanting a quick, engaging, easy read with great suspense and an awesome heroine, this is your book. I really enjoyed the trilogy and would be remise to not point out that an easy, engaging read is often times hard to find. I'm not even a crime/thriller reader but this kept my attention the entire time.

Really, this is a 4.5 star book for me. It took me a while to get into the book and tune into the character's voices, but once I was in, this book was a rocket ride. Vera Dietz is coping on many fronts, but her biggest challenge is to resolve the death of her best friend, Charlie. This book is one part coming-of-age and one part mystery, and King handles both angles marvelously, with a fresh wit and energy that is clever without trying too hard. I really dislike books that drop crumbs so often and tediously that by the time you figure out what the author is hinting at, you actually don't care anymore. But King ramps up the "need to know" with each chapter.

This started well, an interesting premise of the post - apocolyptic future - but the end is very unsatisfactory. the whole story is tied up in just 3 pages at the end. makes me wonder what I was waiting for throught the whole journey..

This Gladwell book was a little different from the others. It was a collection of his columns from the New Yorker on a variety of topics. The others focused on a single topic. It was really interesting and informative. Challenges many preconceived ideas like pit bulls are dangerous dogs. I have one more book to read to complete my Malcolm Gladwell author study. Then I guess I'll have to subscribe to the New Yorker.
