Why wasn't this book required reading in my school? Beyond the historical value, which is weighty, I found myself copying passages into my journal for their truth and eloquence.

I loved the narration of this book. I think, like my friend, I might have thought the editing sucked, but hearing the voices read this to me, I saw the editing was beautifully done. I loved hearing a different person's voice for each character. I hope the movie can capture what this audio version has. Here is the review I wrote for the hardback: Congratulations, Kathryn Stockett for a marvelous first book! I don't usually like reading the best sellers or books others are going crazy about, but somehow I was curious about this one. With the movie coming out, I wanted to read before seeing Hollywood's interpretation. I wasn't raised in the south, unless you can count Southern California. But I do remember things my grandparents said. My grandma would tell us not to pick up money off the sidewalk, "because you don't know what black man might've had it." Little things like that. I thought nothing of it. The trick worked. We didn't pick up the stray coins. I didn't see black people very often in our part of town. I was surprised as an adult when I went back to my home city, that there was a whole section of town I had never been in. And I only learned about it because of the pictures of history up in the downtown library. I admit to being embarrassed that I hadn't known. Hopefully, this book has brought us altogether to discuss. We can never walk in another's shoes, not really, but we can try to understand; communicate. Just because we didn't have "help" in the homes I grew up in, neither were we poor or in the minority. We may have been lucky to have a good education, but we were ignorant of what might have been happening to others who lived in the same town. From other books I've read, the '60s didn't solve all the problems we thought we had. In fact, it seems the pendulum has swung the opposite direction. I see far more prejudice now more than ever, especially to blacks and women of all colors. If this book is selling as well as it seems, maybe the open dialogue will Help us all. Thank you Ms. Stockett.

Reminds me of a not-so-happy Feehan. Also oh L. k. Hamilton and K. Armstrong.

At first, I was thinking "oh, just another stupid vampire novel." I didn't notice the published date, of course, nor the author. I picked it up because of the cover. It looked interesting, even if it WAS about vampires. Well, upon reading the back, it's not about vampires at all, but diabetes, Goth culture (sort of), and being who you want to be. I also picked that up from reading the book, too, of course, but usually I would have put it down before getting to that. Thankfully, I noticed the author: Pete Hautman. I read something by him a year or three ago, and it was good, so I read this one. At first, it was a little boring. But then I got into it, and by the end, the main character's voice felt genuine. Maybe I got used to reading from her point of view, or maybe I started agreeing with her views more, but either way, the whole book was pretty good. It ends with some advice... don't hate your parents, but don't let anyone fool you or mess around with you, and most of all, change yourself into who you want to be. Good enough lessons for me. And of course the sarcasm littered throughout was wonderfully refreshing.

my mother has had this book ever since i can remember. and ever since i can remember, i've loved reading it. the illustrations are an interesting mix of medieval and fantasy art, and the 'science' behind the flight of dragons is actually quite fascinating. also an interesting history of dragon-lore, from virgin sacrifices to st. george.

A funny little autobiography about a mainlander's sailing adventures around Newfoundland. Fogs, leaks, rotting crabs, exploding poo, Mounties, rum-smuggling, the French, etc. What's not to love?

This is one of my favorite books ever. It made me want to be a writer. I really related to Mrs. Ramsay, who was very tuned in to the emotional lives of others. As it happens, though, you turn the page in the book and suddenly Mrs. Ramsay's dead. Oh well. The book is still good after that.

it took me a while to get through, but it's a great book if you're interested in paradoxes
