Mickey Cohen adds what little color there is to this book, making various guest appearances in what is really the history of the modern-day L.A.P.D. From James "Two Gun" Davis to Daryl Gates' resignation, and focusing particularly on William H. Parker, the department's relationship to the city of L.A. takes fascinating if not exactly the gaudy form promised. Though Buntin may not have intended it -- the book is at its best outlining the L.A.P.D.'s troubled history with racial minorities. For students of Los Angeles history, a good addition to the bookshelf.

** spoiler alert ** A drunken sailor, Plantagenet, staggers through the streets of New York, his mind torn and ragged, and his only hope of salvation the city's mental hospital. Inside the hospital, and in-between bouts of delirium and horrific visions, he makes friends with a few of the inhabitants, all of whom are struggling to understand their place in the institution, as they once struggled to understand their place in the wider world. Plantagenet's immurement gradually reveals the degenerate behaviour of the patients and the staff, and he is forced to confront the truth that sanity is little more than a mask. He insists to the doctor his problem is not alcohol but something deeper and more ingrained in his psyche, shortly after which he's unceremoniously let out onto the street to fend for himself. He staggers through the streets, confused and worn, his only hope of salvation: a bottle.

I can relate to a lot of the criticisms of this book, but I so enjoyed it! I found the writing sublime and the themes resonant on many levels. It's not for everyone -- philosophical types will savor it, others might get bored and feel preached to or whined at.

I thought this book was a beautiful love story. Because there was this time traveling element I thought the author would focus more on the idiosyncracies of moving through time. Instead she focused more on developing the characters. It made for a very rich and emotional reading experience.

It you are interested in the recent debate with cloning this won't help you decide but it will sure make you think about a world where it's possible. The US isn't so powerful and has allowed the Mexico boarder to be taken over by a drug lord who keeps him self alive but harvesting the organs of his clones. VERY INTERESTING. It's a must read.
