Good story and interesting telling. There are short first-person narratives regarding the same event. This felt somewhat like the first-person narratives in The Time Traveler's Wife where you get to learn about the event from a each character's experience (and with their bias). The author did a good job with this and it was the main reason I enjoyed the book. The reason for the lower rating is that the book is fairly dark (in the first 25 pages the 3-year-old gets hit by a car, you find out her dad is having an affair and one person commits suicide). It does get better from there and the ending is more bittersweet than dark (if a tiny bit predictable). But in terms of what I tend to call the drama factor, I think people that like Jodi Picoult and don't mind a little supernatural in their stories would love this book. The author does a good job letting the characters grow and learn.

My least favourite book so far that I've read of Michelle Morans. Don't get me wrong it was still a great book which transports you back to Ancient Egypt but it lacked something that the other books (i.e. Nefertiti and Cleopatra's Daughter) had.

I loved this long novella. I live Clay and Elena. This book is told in the first person from Elema's POV. You get a great look into the kids and Clay and Elena's parenting. I'm going to miss them both. I wish there would be more stories to see Kate and Logan grow up.

The realism of the characters in this story is due to the restraint and subtlety of McCullers' sketches. Some reviewers have been amazed at the mature picture she painted of this 1930's Southern town when she was only 22 years old. I think her youth kept her honest. For the reader to see from a character's perspective, the reader cannot know more about the character than the character herself. Thus, the author had to be honest about the limits of individual perspective. The essence of the self is the asymmetry of relationships. This leads to identity, but also to loneliness and insecurity. McCullers captures this reality and compresses it into her small cast of players. There is nothing whimsical for a reader who is embodying these characters, but the experience is exhilarating and recalibrating. It makes us grateful for the love we have.
