Love this book! So amazing, so powerful, so beautifully written! I definitely cried for about the last fifty pages, but there were also points when I laughed out loud. Everyone should read this. People who are into books will especially love it because one of the big themes is the power of the written word. I hope to teach this book to my high schoolers one day.

I know that I may be a bit biased because I am a huge Rush and Neil Peart fan. He was the one who inspired me to play drums. This book has nothing to do with Drums and little about music. It is how he was able to put his life back together after losing what he calls "everything". I am not talking about the money he has from his fame and not his celebrity status. "Everything" to him means his family. He lost his daughter and then his wife in a 9 month period. He talks about the curse of having too much money because he could just lay in bed all day and still afford his bills. He then rides his motorcycle all over Canada, America and Mexico travailing the healing road as a Ghost Rider, a man who is alive but is nothing. This is a very good book and shows the personal struggle of dealing with loss. He always believed that "if you do good, you get good" but he feels this life philosophy gets shattered and he rebuilds a new personality and life philosophy and then is surprised at how he comes back to the same conclusions in the end. He is remarried and continues to work with the band feeling love, joy, peace and can handle the loss even though he still misses them. He believes it was worth the pain to have the privilege to know his wife and daughter. It is also good to see that there are good people in show business who do not live life to excess. He refused to go down the road of drugs. He did drink but found that being drunk only distracts you from your problems until you are sober enough to remember them. In the end he even quits smoking and drinks much less. A beautiful documentation of a man who is willing to take the hard road to grief to get the rewards of joy in the long run. He also writes the lyrics for the band Rush and the CD's lyrics after this tragedy are taken from his journals and show the sorrow, growth and joy of his life. There is even a song called Ghost Rider. The title "Vapor Trails" comes from a letter to a friend. While he is riding he is leaving a vapor trail behind him that is as ghost-like as the ghosts travel with him. There are also songs called "sweet miracle" "Earth shine" "One Little Victory". He also has many parts of lyrics from past CDs that are included at the beginning and end of each chapter.

I can only think of one word to describe this book- weird. Things that happened in this story just don't happen in real life. I hope... I thought Wall's portrayal of Jamie Long as a virgin surrogate mother was a little far-fetched. No matter how bad my finances were in college, I never thought of becoming a surrogate mother to make things easier. When I tried to get a picture in my mind of Gus Hartmann (who suffers from a form of dwarfism), all I could think of was Lord Farquaad from "Shrek."
