Love all of Christopher Moore- but this is the best book EVER. I've read it several times and recommend it to everyone I know.

slow going, but that's because of my attention span. I usually start getting bombarded with "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Arrow to the Sun" as soon as I sit down....

This is the worst book I've ever read. The contempt I bear for the author, whose name we shall not speak, rises beyond the stars and planets, swirling and exploding into a galactic miasma of untempered rage. The Alice books are as sacred texts in my mind, and this ridiculous novel stands as nothing but an abomination. I wrote a review of it ([http://inthewhat.blogspot.com/2006/11...]) when I was only a couple of chapters in, and the thing was tame. I focused on how the guy's a suck writer with no style who picked stupid names for his sugar cookie characters. Then I finished the book and the only reason I didn't write another review and make my feelings more clear is that I was afraid the sizzling hatred would melt my laptop. Contrived, lame, awkward, pretentious, unintelligent, and having the worst ending ever. Oh don't forget putrescent, a delightful word that puts us on the path towards an accurate description. With every page I turned, I felt a gut-wrenching desire to hunt down the author, cut him open, and write "How dare you?" with his viscera. The pain was almost unendurable, but I made it to the end on pure adrenaline. The experience has changed me, and I fear I may never find my soul again.

** spoiler alert ** Weber's seamless transition into the political conflict in this novel firmly confirms the extent of the universe he's built. The length of the novel is quite daunting, and there were chunks of plot that seemed to be more filler than usual, but Weber did a wonderful job intertwining storylines once again. Though I am still slightly undecided on my reaction to finally addressing the Honor/Hamish issue, I do approve of Weber's usage of political deviations to push them together. Whether or not I will eventually agree with Emily's reaction and signing treecats is another matter, though I suppose my initial attitude toward treecats contributes to that hesitancy. However, those minor details aside, I loved putting so many familiar characters back under Honor's command, especially with how realistically it was done, although their time together was entirely too short for my enjoyment. The characters Weber has weaved together were definitely a highlight of this particular novel in the series, especially with how emotionally I found myself invested in the diplomatic situation on both sides. It still amazes me how well Weber can thrust Honor into so many different situations and still keep everything about her character fascinating to watch as she develops along the way. Though I see the necessity for her maintaining a smaller role in future novels in this universe, I regret that I'll be seeing less of her as the series progresses.

Pretty much one of my favorite books of all time. It has everything I love: mythology, the supernatural, great characters and development, and some powerful ideas about what exactly a god is made of...

I like this fairly cozy series set in the Scottish Highlands, but the author needs a few new ideas. The book opens with a surprising gambit. Village policeman and confirmed bachelor Hamish Macbeth is about to get married. How this startling situation came about forms as much of the plot as the investigation of the murder of Annie Fleming the town beauty, queen of the Lammas Fair, who dies after opening a letter-bomb Valentine. Fairly predictable, but with a few twists that keep the story moving.
