Good writing is the result of good thinking. This book dispelled my notion that writing is an activity reserved for students and scholars of the humanities and the social sciences. Good writing is the result of good thinking and, as William Zinsser shows, anyone from any field can produce good writing. Yes, even mathematicians and scientists can write well. Zinsser explores a variety of fields including anthropology, science, history, art history, mathematics, and provides examples of excellent writing from distinguished researchers and scientists. He comments on why he thinks a particular piece of writing is effective and good. Zinsser goes on to explain that writing is simply the technical side of expressing one’s thoughts. It’s the mechanical aspect of constructing sentences, putting them together in a logical sequence, and constantly rereading and rewriting. It is a laborious process and often frustrating one as well. But, like with any other craft, writing well takes time, effort, and determination. If you want to become a better painter/photographer/builder/etc., then go and paint/photograph/build. If you want to become a better writer, then write.

This book may in fact be a great work of art - but I don't see it. There were some great insights, but the muck I had to trudge through dirtied them up a bit. If Joyce had had a good editor and the book were about 60% shorter... maybe I'd be on board ;)

Emily lent me this (after I gave it to her for the holidays, what a nice sister!) and it's a fun, quick read. It's a good reminder of all the sweetness of young love, but I found the writing a bit stilted. And the whole Christian-evengelical-youth thing was a bit foreign. But not uninteresting.

I borrowed this book from a friend. Although it is terribly sad (it recounts the year Didion lost her husband and her daughter became devistated by an illness that eventually kills her), it is a book about survival. And Didion's grasp of the English language is lovely. There were passages of this book that I read over and over.
