Girl in Translation was a fascinating tale of immigration and the darker side to New York City. Kimberly Chang moves with her mother to Brooklyn from Hong Kong in the hope of a more lavish and luxurious lifestyle in the West. What greets them in their small apartment is far from that. Speaking little English both must work hard to assert themselves in a new and bewildering society. What struck me from the offset was how realistic the novel was. The descriptions are remarkably vivid and the feelings of hope and desperation are immensely sincere. Jean Kwok moved to New York aged 5 and found herself in a very similar situation to Kim. This has enabled her to write her novel with loosely autobiographical elements. This was particularly the case with her mother's work in the clothing factory where Kim must work after her classes. The fact that these factories even existed in areas in New York in the 80s was completely unbeknownst to me too. Through her phenomenal intelligence Kim manages to get a place at a fantastic school but this creates problems as she shelters her true identity from her friends and classmates. She must tolerate teasing for her handmade clothes and create excuses as to why she is unable to attend social occasions. Nonetheless Kim's ability to achieve the very best at one of New York's finest schools proves that with hard work anything is possible. Kim smashes through all of life's barriers and it makes for an incredibly inspiring read. It definitely made me want to work harder! While Girl in Translation is evidently a story of immigration it is also a story of first love. Kim leads two very different lives in New York and falls in love with two boys, Matt and Curt, from very different walks of life. Her journey through adolescence and beyond forces her to choose between them and two very different futures. Ultimately Kim must choose her own destiny and I personally wasn't disappointed with the ending although I'm sure it didn't go the way many would have wanted. Although I could have read far more of Kim's story it wasn't left unfinished and I was definitely satisfied. I will most certainly be reading Jean's future books and I cannot recommend this highly enough. Buy a copy for your mother, your sister or your daughter - they'll love it.

I listened to the author reading this book. I didn't find it as compelling as her first book, but it was enjoyable. I got more from the back material that was added on after the book, in which she talked about how she came to write this book, how she structured it, and why what was originally to be a story about her mother, became a story about her grandmother. She also discussed her decision to write the book as fiction.

Beautiful, fantastic, compelling, I could go on, but it would take pages to accurately reflect how highly I regard this book. Truly a masterpiece. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

I don't know why Walt Whitman fucks me up so badly, but he does and bless him for it. He's the only poet that makes me outright cry. I'm really hoping to get a 1900 edition someday.

This book has really opened my eyes to my own life as an independant, 'progressive' (really, in my case, radical), black American woman . It's like reading about my life before I lived it.

The Kate Daniels series contains a world and characters that are awesome their complexities and grabs my attention anew which each book, and Magic Bleeds is the best yet out of them all. The whole setup for this series makes reading each book feel like a place I just want to dig into and setup my own personal immovable spot. Magic Bleeds was an action packed and fascinating read from start to finish. I haven't read a book like this one that had me so revved up for the next book in a series in a long while. Well, not since reading Dreamfever. [winks] Kate Daniels as a heroine for me is perfect. She's smart talking and tough on the outside with mad fighting skills but she has a softer side that she tries to keep hidden, that has a tendency to bleed over into her actions and decisions that truly pulls me to her. Curran as Kate's love interest is also perfect. Curran and Kate together is perfection. I couldn't think of a better person for Kate. He makes my toes curl, in a good way. The rest of the characters all have their individual quirks that make them feel real as a fiction character can, especially the bad guys. The bad guys. Whoa, they left me with a hopeless feeling in my gut, speculating on how will Kate get herself and everyone involved out of their dire circumstances. All in all, to be brief and to the point, just do yourself a favor pick up this book but also get the first three if you haven't read them because they are so well worth any reader's time and money. You'll find suspense, intrigue, interesting characters you'll want to call your friends and the perfect romance. I'm going to end this with Kate's on words "Bring it!" because I can't wait to dig in with next book in this series, Magic Slays.
