three stars for the 'fun' factor. reminiscent of harry harrison's 'stainless steel rat' series, but the writing is a little better (except for when it's not :) ). very light fare. loved the *lack* of technology in this futuristic pulpish narrative. (hint: they're on *mars*, and there are *still* no flying cars!)

I remember reading and re-reading this years ago from the very sparse collection on my mum's bookshelf at home. Absolute trashy escapism set amongst the glamour and sexiness of an american magazine business - I have fond memories of this book. I think there was also a Dynasty-esqe glossy tv mini-series in the 80's.

Monstrous, cruel, iniquitous Gretchen Lowell is one bad chic. The book is almost two stories that come together in the end as one. There was no real mystery in this book. I found the account between Gretchen (the serial killer) and Archie (the detective) far more interesting than the main story line itself.

I suppose I shouldn't have this in my "read" column since I didn't get very far before I started skimming and decided this is NOT my kind of book. Too much of a lot of things: convoluted plot, endless descriptions, and, worst of all, too much violence toward women that turned my stomach. I know it's been a huge best seller so I wanted to like it...didn't work for me.

If you like science and philosophy such as the kind of explored peripherally in Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash", you'll have a great time exploring the twists and turns and amazing world of Arb in Anathem. I listened to this as an Audiobook, and I think that worked well for me as I could easily have been caught up in the translation and recognition of some of the created words, so consider the Audiobook version.

Vampires, werewolves, warlocks, demons, shadow hunters, flying bikes, oh and incest? WTF? Honestly at a certain point, I actually saw that coming. Really though? I've seen some of what is to come in future books and I'm just dying to know how that's going to happen. There was decent action and the plot was written well enough to keep me drawn to it but there were too many things that had me asking "really?" an awful lot. I enjoyed the personalities of the characters for the most part, especially Jace and his wittiness. I was loving the book until the so called twist took place with the cup. After that, the rest of the book let me own a bit. There was a different side of Jace that I didn't particularly like seeing. Im hoping the next books will get better and I can have less WTF moments. I so want to give these book 5 stars but I just can't do it for this one.

I adore Alice Hoffman and usually I feel she can do no wrong when writing a story.....whether it be long or short......and this is another example of two lovely little stories that make you feel good after reading them.....Aquamarine and Indigo.......two sweet names for two sweet stories......keeping this book for my daughter to read.....it just made me smile.
