This book was written in the perspective of a little boy who realizes that his father had lost his job in the depression. The boy does what he can to help add money to the families money jar. Not only is it a nice story about responsibility, but it is a great book to help current students understand a little more about what the depression era was like in the United States. The illustrations take a slight cartoon view of an urban New York area, but all the while show historicl detail like older cars and clothing. The main character becomes a newsie and realizes he can sell more papers by yelling out the Babe Ruth headlines. To me, this shows so much about the time period and dedication people had towards their hero The Babe. This book could be a great model for students who are writing historical fiction writing pieces. The seamless way David Adler brings in historical detail is awesome.

Many years have passed since I first read this book but it is still in my Top 10 where books are concerned. Here's why: as someone else said, as you read this book, you find yourself sympathizing with the protagonist. You begin to understand what's going on in his head and how he got where he is. Disturbing? Yes. But I find it all the more impressive that Homes can draw you completely into whatever world she chooses.

Произведение прекрасное, легкое, но при всей своей непринужденности поднимающее глубокие вопросы. Замечательные тонкие фразы, афоризмы. Очень удачно и название. Фраза, которая мне очень понравилась: "Разве что-нибудь плохое с тобой может приключиться там, где столько добрых, хорошо одетых людей и так мило пахнет серебром и крокодиловыми бумажниками?" И вот еще одна: "Если бы я нашла место, где можно было бы жить и где я чувствовала бы себя, как у Тиффани, - тогда я купила бы мебель и дала коту имя." Героиня мне симпатична. Мне кажется, она очень искренна во всем, что делает, в ней есть внутренний стержень и сила, она умеет удивлять и удивляться. Хочется, чтобы у неё все было хорошо. Открытый финал книги с надеждой на лучшее (ведь кот нашел свой дом), думаю, очень удачен.

“Here is a small fact. You are going to die.” (p.3). These words are an introduction by the narrator in The Book Thief. The story begins with Liesel Menimger traveling with her mother and brother by train to a small town outside of Nazi occupied, Munich Germany. Liesel’s brother dies on the trip and it is then that the narrator, who we now know is Death, becomes intrigued by her. Liesel steals her first book, The Gravedigger’s Handbook from the cemetery where her brother is buried. This book will keep her close to her brother as she is given to a foster family. Liesel is treated well by her foster parents, Hans and Rosa Huberman. Hans teaches Liesel to read from The Gravedigger’s Handbook and she begins to understand the power of words. Liesel becomes infatuated with books, developing a relationship with the mayor’s wife who invites her to read in her library. Hans agrees to hide a Jew named Max Vandenberg in his basement. Max is a 24-year-old man who, like Liesel, is haunted by nightmares of the loss of his family. Liesel and Max become close friends. They share a love of reading and Max gives Liesel a book that he has written as a birthday gift, painting over Hitler’s words in Mein Kampf. When Max is no longer safe in the Hubermans house, he must leave and face death as he is marched to Dachau. Liesel begins to lose hope and sees that it is words (Hitler’s propaganda) that are responsible for the war and death of millions of people. With the encouragement of the mayor’s wife, Liesel decides to tell her story, knowing that words can encourage peace, not just destruction. One of the major themes in The Book Thief is that words and propaganda can be incredibly destructive. Liesel realizes that it is Hitler’s words that compel people to commit acts of cruelty. It is ironic how when Max writes a book for Liesel’s birthday, he paints over the words in Mein Kampf, Hitler’s political ideology. “They were the erased pages of Mein Kampf, gagging, suffocating under the paint as they turned.” (p.237). Zusak’s story is incredible. I was first introduced to it in an adult book club. Although written for young adults, I think this is a book that older audiences won’t be able to put down. Zusak is from Australia. His parents grew up in Germany. They often shared stories with him about living in Germany during WWII. It is their stories that inspired him to write The Book Thief

So I think you can imagine that an Iranian immigrant married to a French gentleman with a large extended family who has lived in the Berkeley, CA area might have some funny stories to tell. She does! Her book is personable, smart and fun. It also certainly had me pegged as a Westerner who has no interest in drinking bovine urine. I am somewhat adventurous in my culinary and gastronomic indulgences, but I hope never to have to drink pee from any animal.
