ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. I loved this book and it was totally worth the few months I spent waiting for it!! The world is believable and fully formed, the writing is lyrical and GORGEOUS, and the characters have depth and a truth to their expressions. LOVED IT.

I'm not quite sure where this book fell flat for me. No doubt, it's extremely well-written and I appreciated the candid look into life in Afghanistan, but it just wasn't "amazing." I've literally had this book for years and now that I've finally read it, it just wasn't the gripping story I expected. While I don't doubt at all that life is that dire for many people, maybe this book was just a bit too sad and tragic for me.

i would give this book a three but my mom would give it a five, so i'll compromise. i had a hard time with the punctuation (no quotation marks, just hyphens). as i had a hard time with the speech. but once i got past that, it was okay. i do enjoy reading historical fiction and south africa certainly has an interesting history.

Bubbles A Broad, by Sarah Strohmeyer- 2 and ½ stars; a whodunit, written primarily for a female audience, and very, very much in the style of Janet Evanovich. Humorous passages in the first half of the book made me laugh, but in the second half, the plot almost completely takes over the book. Still, a satisfying read. Polish references included, e.g., referring to the elderly neighbor women as "babushkas". Proof that "chick lit" isn’t just for chicks. Originally, I gave this book 3 stars, but Mom couldn’t even finish it, so I had to deduct half a star.
