Gently satirical story about the slums of Kuwisha, in Africa, where Charity Mupanga runs Harrods International Bar. She is the centre of a cirlce of local friends, a motley crew of aid workers with lofty ambitions, and a disreputable group of street boys, who sniff glue and depend on her for handouts in the form of dough balls. There is an election in the air, and plans to clear the slums. Charity has to fight the officials to save Harrods, while deciding what to do about the Englishman who loves her. Will she marry him and move to England, will he stay with her in Africa, and will she be able to save her beloved Harrods, as well as install the new toilet block that she dreams about?

Very Harry Dresden-ish, but set in San Francisco. I enjoyed the music theme throughout, and look forward to diving into the next three books. It did feel a bit shallow, so I hope the story lines gain more depth as the series goes. I was a tad irritated with how the Wiccan was portrayed, but overall it was light, fun reading.

Evelyn has to choose between a thief and her intended husband. This book would have been improved considerably with the clean excision of the entire Rene storyline. It wasn't compelling, it didn't add to the plot in any way, and I've never met a less sympathetic possible hero. With that removed, the rest of the book was a pleasant, if bland, narrative of a medieval noble family with some anachronistic values.

I enjoyed this psychological thriller about a woman who was recruited as a British spy in the years leading up to WWII. It includes some interesting history about the efforts to create disinformation campaign to encourage the U.S. to become involved in the war. The novel moves between Eva's (Sally's) story and that of her daughter who knows nothing of her mother's past at the outset, and it plays with the interesting concerns about the effect of having been a spy on Sally's ability to live the rest of her life and on her relationship with her daughter.

This is a rape manual. I kid you not. There's a rape fantasy in each page. I HATE Jelinek. I don't mean her writing. I hate HER.

I thought it was fun interesting reading but not factual in anyway.

Evil snake demons have a plan to take over the world of 1700's France that involved possessing various poets. The only one that can stop them is the young Chevalier d'Eon, who is a master detective, agent for the King and when possessed by the spirit of his dead sister, he puts on a dress, wig and magic sword. What's in the drinking water in Japan? I love historical fantasy and this one has a nice blend of history and monsters and magic, but the art is too dark and over done and the artist seems too busy showing us all the blood and shadows that the storytelling seems to take second place. Enough interesting stuff here that I'll try volume two, but it'll take a great story to overcome some weak art.

By the time I got to the final book I was of course hooked to the drama of the family, and felt like I enjoyed the saga of the Hastings family and all their connections. It definitely was exciting to read about battles so close to home and near the area in which I live. I have a better understanding of the Civil War, (though I'm not done craving more)! I won't say that I was satisfied by how the series ended because how can any war book end on a completely happy note. There were tragedies left unsolved and families torn apart, lives altered forever. There was a sense of loss and a sense of difficulty to rebuild, a desire to start over and yet still go back to what can never be... so I give it good marks for leaving me feeling the same way the people of that time would have felt at the end of the war.

When the subject of the genocide in Rwanda comes up one of the most frequent questions that arises is how could people carry out such gruesome acts. This book does as best as any to try to answer that. It is interesting to hear the story from the killers point of view.
