Who doesn't love the story of how Lucivar and Marian met? C'mon.

It started off well. But then as the story went on it just got weirder and weirder. Though there were some good points to it. I consider myself to be as punk as he is, (hahahaha what a joke term.) And I too struggled with addiction. So this book came to me at the right time when I decided to get clean and attend NA meetings and work the steps. But e spends so much time name-dropping of bands he knows, trying to solidify his coolness, that's trying a little too hard. And then having rich well known hippie parents of course they're gonna financially support him in all of his endeavors, cause he's spoiled. So he had a good run living the life of punk rawk (yeah cool dude!) then juvie victim, then he rode the straight edge bandwagon, until he felt he needed a 'spiritual awakening.' Which in his eyes was using mommy and daddies money to travel to india and pretend to be Buddha. It had its moments, but Noah Levine ended up to be some pompous asshole rich kid with a huge ego. YOU AINT GAWD, NOAH! get over yourself....

I know that while the novel has actually done a reasonable job of standing the test of time and maintaining its popularity – many feel it is too sugary. I had not read it in my youth. I bought the audio book for C for Christmas last year and we’ve listened to it several times since then. For those who are interested, it is unabridged and is read by Rebecca Burns – I ordered it through Tantor Media. After my first listen, I had a few ideas that subsequent listening solidified in my mind. I don’t know if Eleanor Porter intended my conclusions or not or if it really has a deeper subtext than I attribute to it or not but here is my thoughts. When one considers the game and its roots in the difficulties of Pollyanna’s poverty and the loss of her mother. One has to realize that while Pollyanna comes off syrupy – she has many reasons to be bitter and not to be so positive that it becomes clear that the story isn’t about someone who just doesn’t understand the difficulties of this life. But what really makes me think there is more to the Glad Game concept is Pollyanna’s discussion with her aunt’s pastor regarding the ‘rejoicing texts.’ She points out that the Bible tells us over 800 times to ‘rejoice and be glad’ or variations on that theme which means it is important to God that we are grateful and glad for what we have. I think the idea ties in nicely with Job and Joseph...the idea that all things work to our good. If this is true and God tells us so often to be glad, we must have the ability through God’s grace to be content and even joyful during our difficulties. As I was writing this, I googled Pollyanna and found this at Wikipedia “Through the success of the book, the term "pollyanna" entered the language to describe someone who is cheerfully optimistic. It then became by extension (and contrary to the spirit of the book) a somewhat derogatory term for a naïve person who always expects people to act decently, despite strong evidence to the contrary. The real theme of Pollyanna is that she kept the spirit of forgiveness towards all and could find gladness for whatever was given her.” So, I don’t have an original thought in my head. Ah, well.

I recently read 'Tewkesbury 1471', which is in the same Pen & Sword series as this one. I quite like these Pen & Sword books. The hsitories are well written and they have some interesting pen pics of the leading figures involved. I quite regularly visit the City of Worcester, so I was already fairly familiar with some of the sites within the city. If I have a criticism, I feel that both books would benefit with the inclusion of a modern map, with battle sites etc., shown superimposed. The tour description of the city advises a climb to the top of Worcester Cathedral's tower, which I know is not always possible and not something I would relish.

I have read a lot of novels by Johanna Lindsey and this seemed like all the others. I think Ms. Lindsey is having a difficult time coming up with new and interesting plots. Her books have always relied on a series of misunderstandings, coincidences and even outright lies to keep the hero and heroine apart. The resolution of the tale is always the explaining of what really happened from both parties points of view, and then they love each other and get married, the end. Pretty much the same stuff here. Also features the "pretty girl who tries to look ugly/plain by wearing glasses and shapeless clothes and tying her (super-long) hair up really tight" cliche. Also a non-challenging book to read on Caribbean vacation.

This series of Poirot stories is very well written, with intriguing plots and well developed characters. The fact that these stores are written from the perspective of Hastings creates some interesting narrative tension at times, as you start to engage with his frustrations or get annoyed at his apparent naivety. The entire approach of the Poirot character to detective work is rather different to that of other fictional crime fighters. As a fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories, I found it an odd change to get used to. It is what makes the character unique though. It was the first time I had read any of Agatha Christie's writing, and to be honest, I found her writing style quite difficult to get into sometimes -- I think this is because it is more rich and formal than I am used to. One criticism I would have is that the stories do seem to run on somewhat. There are periods of time when the plots seem to have little momentum, and it can be hard to keep going. Nonetheless, I am glad I read this book. Thoroughly enjoyed, and I hope to read more of Poirot's adventures in the future.

This book could not live up to its horrible, lurid promises. I can't believe Andrew Neiderman got to be the new V.C. Andrews!

At least this one had resolution, unlike IN THE WOODS, which frustated me no end. This book is set in Dublin with wonderful detail on how the lower classes live.
