I devoured this book in about two days--that's how engrossed I was and how much I wanted to find out what happened next. Now that I'm done, I will concede that it's a bit too long, that there are way too many characters, that they all have about 9 lives too many, and yet despite all of its flaws I came away from the book still partially lost in its world. I fully enjoyed reading it and can't wait to see what Mr. Dalhquist comes up with next.

Over-rated. I expected an historical mystery of the caliber of LeCarre or Arthur Conan Doyle, and I found instead a hi-falutin' DaVinci Code, without the fast paced plot.

The last in the Odd series I believe? An excellent finish to the saga.

liked it, but i thought there may have been some unnecessary hype surrounding the book

I met Mr Hays at a writers workshop. I was tremendously impressed with his way of teaching in using childhood events and memories to build on for writing. His book is poignant without being syurpy. With the rise of the incidents of Alzheimer's today, it is also timely. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I read The Women on the Porch about 15 years ago, shortly after moving into Benfolly, the old house on the Cumberland River where the author and her husband Alan Tate lived during the 1930's. Although I remembered liking the book enough to give it 4 stars and suggest it for our Book Club reading, I have found on its rereading that I didn't remember much about the book - or perhaps now am noticing different things about it than I did then. I have wanted to reread this book for years and am so glad that I finally have. One of the things that has always struck me about Caroline Gordon's writing is her clear and distinctive descriptions of the natural world in which her characters reside and the story unfolds. Her thoughtfully detailed verbal illustrations of scenes carries me totally into the world she is describing, mesmerizes me with memory and recognition. Her notice of the smallest leaf picking up light, the aspect of the sky, the quality of air, the surrounding flora works to capture the very essence of the outdoor world in beautiful wording that vividly illuminates the setting for each scene in the story, placing the reader solidly into the place of which she writes. And sense of PLACE is a very important aspect of Gordon's writing.

This isn't the kind of book you love, this is the kind of book you truly appreciate. Tim O'Brien wrote a short story called "How to Tell A True War Story". This is what Crawford does, I believed every word because none of these stories has a conclusion. You're left with a horrible feeling of mixed emotions. That can't happen unless it's true. Strangely, I feel better for reading it. But not in any kind of shiny happy people way.

When I was reading this I felt like Chuck was writing about my childhood. Except I didn't really dig "Shout at the Devil" that much. Very fun read!

During WWI, e.e. cummings was, like Hemingway, a volunteer ambulance driver. According to the back of the book, this book is his account of the "comedy of errors" that "led to his arrest and imprisonment for treason. . . . The author's sense of absurdity transforms the outrage of unjust incarceration into a high-energy romp." This memoir, the back continues, "ranks with the best of its contemporaries, including the works of Hemingway." Lies, lies, lies. I rarely fail to finish a book, but this was so grindingly boring, I had to quit. If anything, I think cummings missed an opportunity to write the memoir that the back of the book claims this was; that sort of memoir could've been a classic.
