Very funny but could use some nuance and subtlety.

Starkey's 800-page book is fascinating. At times he goes into too much detail (I don't really care about the minute details each ambassador who was involved in the divorce).

Reread of a favorite. Still in love with Conroy's use of language, if the format ends up being familiar.

I saw the 1967 Richard Brooks film in a violence in film class at UCLA. In Cold Blood and Texas Chainsaw Massacre are the only two films that have stuck with me for these ten years. So when I was given a copy of In Cold Blood by Truman Capote through BookCrossing, I felt compelled to read it for two reasons: I've enjoyed other books by Capote and I still remember the film. Were it not for those two reasons, I would have skipped the book as I'm not normally a fan of the true-crime genre. The violent murders of Herbert and Bonnie Clutter and their two youngest children: Nancy and Kenyon in 1959 became a media sensation as these violent crimes are wont to do. Inspired by a 300 word summary of the crime in the New York Times, Capote and long time friend Harper Lee headed west to interview everyone associated with the crime. The result of six year's work was In Cold Blood. Reading the book clarified in my mind just how well I still remember the film and confirmed that I still am not a fan of true-crime (or the nonfiction novel as Capote called his book). The work is well researched and well written but it wasn't a page-turner for me. The book suffers from an information overload and a lack of organization. Capote seems lost under all these witness testimonies, not sure what to keep, what to cut and where to put things. Things stumble along in a more or less chronological order but without the benefit of logical segues between interviews.

Be prepared to actually be rooting for Lex Luther. Neither he nor Superman are likable – they are two competing ideologies turned into very powerful flesh and blood people. Two chess masters, using the human population as chess pieces as the Cold War goes in a very different direction thanks to a certain space shuttle landing in the Ukraine instead of Kansas. Its not just Supes and Lex - Green Lantern, Lois lane, Wonder Woman, Batman (with the COOLEST hat!), Brainiac, and Lana Lane all show up in a very fascinating Elseworlds – with an ending that delivers a very cool twist.

Originally posted at Fiction Vixen. In Backstage Pass, the first book in the Sinners On Tour series, Sed was notorious for behaving badly. He openly seduced the girlfriends of his band members without regard for his friend’s feelings and was generally quite promiscuous. It turns out he was suffering from a shattered heart. Jessica left Sed after a brief but very intense relationship two years prior. Now she is back, and through a series of events she is now on tour with the band earning money for law school. The spark that was between them once upon a time is still there and the chemistry is undeniable so they act on it agreeing it will only be for the time that Jessica is on the tour, then they will go their separate ways. Sed and Jessica are two very headstrong protagonists that clash frequently. Instead of communicating verbally, they work out their frustrations with each other in the bedroom—or out of it as the case may be. There was a lot of really hot sex going on, but when there were words between Sed and Jessica they were occasionally very hurtful. They are both very passionate people but beyond the really hot sex scenes, I had a difficult time with both of these characters. Sed really rode line when it came to being an ass and a couple of times he blatantly crossed the line. Now I know he’s a natural leader, feels deeply responsible for those he considers in his care and has a heart of gold. That was made very clear and those are certainly qualities I can admire. But he was just so controlling and abrasive at times it really put me off. For all his favorable qualities I still had a hard time forgiving his behavior. Near the end of the book he does something very humiliating to Jessica and I felt at that point in the book his character should have grown enough that he would be able to make his point without humiliating the woman he loves. Jessica, equally as stubborn as Sed, seemed to let herself be pushed around by him but at the same time she fights him and is constantly engaged in a battle to stand up to him. She’s determined not to let him steam roll her but then next thing we know he’s trampling all over her again. I was pretty confused by her character and never really could come to a point where I understood where she was coming from or even where she was going. Although I wasn’t blown away by the romance in Rock Hard I still really enjoyed the interactions between the band members and the really fun uninhibited good times this cast of characters have. The chemistry and friendship between them is enviable I have a special fondness for each and every one of the Sinners. Yes, even Sed. He did manage to impress me with an admirable act of friendship toward my favorite Sinner Trey. For the Trey fans (oh yes, raising my hand high) you may find yourself swooning for him even more than you thought possible. He goes through some very serious trials and tribulations in Rock Hard and his story really tugged at my heart-strings this time. I’m glad he had his friend Sed to see him through a very difficult time. I really can’t wait for his book. I mean it, I can’t wait! While I didn’t enjoy Rock Hard as much as I did Backstage Pass, this series still remains a very guilty pleasure for me. I impatiently await more uninhibited, rock and roll good times from the crazy, sexy rock gods, the The Sinners. Favorite Quote: “If you move from that bed, Terrance, I’ll tell Mom why the last pool boy quit,” Dare threatened.

it's a metaphorical memoir. need i say more? fascinating stuff. where fictions arise, they do so to more accurately tell the truth of an emotion or situation. and so, ultimately, truth reigns, no?

I read "The Last Picture Show" the summer before I went to college and I immediately fell in love with it. The characters are mostly likable and the story kept me fascinated, wondering what Sonny and Duane are going to get into next. The book is followed by several sequels, if you are interested in finding out what happens to the characters.

Wow! This was a great book. I really hope that the different worlds in the afterlife exist. Sigh!

I really felt like I was in a different world when I was reading this book. I was living with this strange vibe during the time I was reading it. It was really amusing and gave me a new perspective on things. Things in the story might have started getting messed up by the end, but that just added to the bittersweet strangeness. It's the kind of book you can't put down. It's not really that fast-paced, but you can't stop turning pages. I really liked Richard in the beginning, but then his thoughts started to get warped and he just seemed to be going crazy. The ending really surprised me because throughout the whole book I felt like Richard's crazy compared to everyone else, but in the end everyone lost their shit and literally went crazy. I guess paradise just can't exist on our planet. The book was mostly enjoyable because of the different perspective and the spontaneity of the story. Despite all the craziness, it's strangely believable. Somehow, it's ambiguous. Different people interpret it in different ways. You can learn many things from this book depending on how you see certain things in the story. I'm not so sure how I interpret it. I just know it was a fun read full of adventure, laughs, and horror, with a few things I learned here and there. It really taught me to keep an open mind.
