If you've read Housekeeping and think that this book will be similar, be warned. Robinson creates a radically different (but still excellent) plot and structure in Gilead. The novel is essentially a series of letters from an old dying preacher to his young son who will never know his father as an adult, except through these letters that contain doses of family history, fatherly advice, internal struggle, and "current" happenings. As the reader, you will become so sucked into the old man's narrative that you will begin to believe that you actually found this stack of letters, yellowed with age in the attic and addressed to you. Since this is Robinson we're talking about, her writing is as usual delicate and poignant; it glides along effortlessly until you slow down and notice how insanely talented it really is. I kept thinking, "this is so good...how could this be so good?" Then I remembered that I wasn't the only one raving--the novel did win a Pulitzer.

I thought this first book in theseries was much better then the second of ther series. It had more adventure and was more fun. It was a quick read and I really liked it.

I thought this was a novel but it turned out to be 2 stories both taking place on Surrender Island. Basically, I was bored throughout the book but I'm one of those who can not just put down a book without finishing it. Althought I did skim A LOT of the book. The description of the book sounded really interesting but the actual story fell way short of my expectations. This wasn't really a power exchange book - the "sub" was basically given control - at least a good amount of it. Really it was just about a "Dom" giving constant orgasims to the "sub" and her protesting that she doesn't like it. Whatever. I was bored.

A illuminating book on the last years of the Roman Republic from about 150 BC leading to the eventual command of Augustus (the 1st Emperor of the Roman Empire) in 27 BC, and the fall of a tenuous democracy that spanned the Mediterranean Sea. Filled with the march of a great empire over the decades, the stories and retelling of the history of the Republic of Roman bears close similarities to the United States, and echoes cautionary winds on the corruption and greed that befalls all great nations.Rogue leaders that caused strife through civil war, and the downside of having a strong military. A brilliant retelling that was a joy to read.

I just finished this - really enjoyed it! Especially the fact that it takes place in the wild West and Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane make a showing (it sounds corny but it wasn't at all). I thought Mattie's struggles were very real-to-life and felt drawn into her world, and found myself wanting to know more about many of the minor characters as well. I do feel that Mattie's romance was kind of contrived sometimes (I didn't ever really know Aron or understand why Mattie would be attracted to him), but the storyline was exciting and interesting enough that I didn't care. The message of God's grace was moving and totally effective. Satisfying read!

I really want to give this 3 1/2 stars. It wasn't exeptional, but I did really enjoy it. The character development is mostly fantastic. Still, I don't know that I understand what the "point" of the book was. Abrupt ending. Interesting, but not exceptional.

Third in the series and 500 pages of solid character development with little real "action." Subtly sets up the mindfuckery of Children of the Mind.

After a rich and very promising prologue, this novel becomes steadily more formless and (to my mind) pointless. It's a doppleganger novel essentially, but the correspondences and contrasts never develop (through 100 pages, when I quit) in any coherent direction, and the two main characters never impress one as real anyway.

The movie looked good, so my girlfriend and I gave it a go. Amazing, frightening, and inspiring. This book is the collection of diaries written by Erin's students from room 203. It's infinitely more real and relevant than if the teacher had written it ABOUT her students. This is their horror, their world, in their words. Careful - you might just see inner-city life differently after reading this.
