I finished this book in two days, through more than a few tears. Reading it close to the tenth anniversary of 9/11 gives new meaning to the hole in the sky where the towers once stood now being filled again by the 104-story new One World Trade tower. I did not personally know anyone killed on 9/11 but this book made me feel as though I did. It's an easy read, and the author does have extraordinary resources to help her in her grief (financial and emotional with a large circle of great friends and family). But it doesn't matter because a loss like she endured is equally horrifying and difficult for anyone. She had her dream life, husband, kids, home, friends, etc. and she lost it in one day. Not only did she lose her husband, she lost two members of their wedding party and countless friends, as he was one of the 658 Cantor Fitzgerald employees killed. I loved how NYC is a sort of third character, with restaurants and locations woven throughout. She didn't leave NYC after her husband died, she stayed (she promised her husband that died that she would never make him live anywhere other than Manhattan) and found new life and new love. A truly touching book.

Stopping Time is a little novella that picks up a short time after the events of Ink Exchange, where Leslie severed her ties to Irial and the Dark Court, and to Niall as well, in order to save herself from who she might become as a member of the Dark Court, IF she even survived the Ink Exchange experiment. At the end of Ink, Irial bestowed the leadership of the Dark Court to Niall. Everyone is trying to adjust to these recent changes. Leslie is now trying to live her life without faerie influence, going back to school, having new MORTAL friends, although that is almost impossible to do when you're still under the Dark Court's protection, as she is receiving mysterious phone calls that have her spooked, and Irial and Niall even more protective of her. Even though Leslie is no longer a conduit to feed the Dark Court, she is still a potential pawn in the constant power struggles between the courts. Irial & Niall both still love Leslie, and she struggles constantly with her feelings towards them... knowing that if she tries to pursue a relationship with either of them, she'll lose herself in the Dark Court... she doesn't want to be that person who lives amongst the Dark Court. She had a glimpse of that version of herself when she was under the influence of the ink exchange... and that terrified her enough to find the strength to sever those ties (with Niall's help). Leslie constantly fights the addictive pull to she has to both Irial and Niall... that's one side of the story... all the while, it seems, Niall and Irial are trying to figure out exactly what their own relationship is to each other. There is a strange sort of intensity between them that is further explored as the story unfolds. I liked how this filled in the little gap left between Ink and Fragile Eternity... as well as what happened to Leslie's brother Ren. However, what I don't think got answered was what happened between Michael (Leslie's new mortal friend that likes her) and Irial??? Curious...

Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett combined, how come nobody thought of that before? Great book, I especially loved Crowley and Aziraphale, who gave a refreshing look on what angels and demons may be like in a modern world :) The humour was wonderful, cynical and sarcastic, though I have a feeling that I didn't get all of the jokes, and if I perhaps reread the book in a few years I'll pick up some of the more subtle ones. A funny thing was - that I could discern at parts, which was Gaiman's writing, and which was Pratchett's. The riders of the apocalypse, I think, were the best portrayed, it was just hilarious about Famine, sketched out to be the one responsible for all the anorexics in the last decades. Totally and honestly recommended. 28.3.07

Have you ever balked at reading a book that comes with enthusiastic recommendations? Three Cups of Tea was that kind of book for me. Everyone was recommending it and it had won lots of awards including Time Magazine's Asia Book Award. It got high marks from bookbrowse.com, a reviewing source I hold in high regard, and it was the choice of our non-fiction reading group, a group of people who usually pick some great books. So why was I avoiding starting this book. I'm not quite sure but I had this picture of it of being a virtuous story and dripping with sentimentality and my sour mood of the week wasn't buying it. Finally the day came when I could put it off no longer. I had to read the book. As always, in these matters, someone has more sense than me. Three Cups of Tea is worth all the good press it has received and more. It could have been a tedious telling of boring facts, outlining Greg Mortenson's plan to build schools to promote peace in the remote villages of Pakistan. That it was not, I credit to the author David Oliver Relin's skill. From page one I was hooked as he describes Mortenson's attempt and failure to climbK2, the world's second highest mountain, in the Karakoram range of northern Pakistan. I met many interesting people in these pages, con artists, swindlers, philanthropists, village children and the Taliban. I listened to the foresight of village leaders and elders who knew that education would improve the life of their people. I cried as on Haji Ali fought those who would stop construction of his village school. The cost, twelve large rams, rams that are as valuable as a firstborn child, a prize cow or family pet to these people. He shares this with Mortenson "Do you see how beautiful this Koran is? I can't read it. I can't read anything This is the greatest sadness in my life. I'll do anything so the children of my village never have to know this feeling. I'll pay any price so they have the education they deserve." I nodded my head in agreement with the advice given to Mortenson as he drinks cups of scalding butter tea with the chief of the village and aptly gives title to the book. "The first time you share tea with a Balti, you are a stranger. The second time you take tea, you are an honored guest. The third time you share a cup of tea, you become family, and for our family we are prepared to do anything, even die. Doctor Greg, you must make time to share three cups of tea. We may be uneducated, but we are not stupid. We have survived here for a long time." There is edge of your seat suspense as Mortenson learns the ropes of negotiating in a culture that he is unfamiliar. I tensed the first time he carried large sums of money in his vest pockets for needed building materials with crooks lurking everywhere. I cringed when he was kidnapped and was feared for his life. Death threats and two fatwas add to my unease. Somehow, Mortenson comes out of all this and over time eventually builds that first school and many others, not only in Pakistan, but Afghanistan too. How fortunate I am to be able to read and how lucky I am that my book group chose Three Cups of Tea. It is an uplifting story and an excellent read. I'll be buying copies for my friends. Hopefully, they will not be as pig-headed a me and will read it soon.
