am enjoying the different rhythm of reading poetry versus prose. it's like dim sum: less volume but oh, the burst of flavour! an eclectic, rather democratic selection -- the index at the back giving nuggets of author info is nice.

I seldom read cozies, so I may not be the best judge, but this was fun. The quirky heroine, the hunky carpenter, and the old house setting worked well. The mystery held together well enough to be a pleasant read, overall a good cozy.

I really wanted to give it 3.5 stars. It took me awhile to connect with the characters, but then when I did, I felt really tied to them and to their fortunes and misfortunes. I enjoyed the slow emergence of trust and love between the long-estranged brother and sister, and the complications caused by their dying father's mixed feelings about his son. It's a slow, simple book on the surface, but there's more going on than meets the eye.

I loved this book - the comming of age and searching to learn about her mother totally captivated me. Even though I found it highly unlikely that the "Calendar Sisters" really could have had their own business in the South during the 1940's I still loved their characters and the Legend of the Black Madonna.

I can see why so many teens are crazy about this book. Even so, I never quite understood why the character commited suicide and kept thinking there must be more about her life/emotional state that wasn't revealed.
