The author's use of metaphor and description is beautiful, poetic. He also made me laugh out loud in several parts, which I don't expect from a fantasy novel about unicorns. It was a very touching story, and the I particularly love following the changes in the Prince's character. I did get a bit bored by the minstrel songs and thought it dragged in a few places, hence the four stars. Although this story is appropriate for children starting around age 9, adults can enjoy it too. Read it to your kids!

An amazing book about having grown up in an abusive and dysfunctional family, but dealing with it quite nicely as an adult. What is most remarkable is her matter-of-fact tone about it, and how she doesn't really blame them for their faults. I still can't fathom their messed up priorities.

Heard So much about this book that I was like so much curious to taste the stuff and I tell you I am not disappointed...! First of all the writer's style is so captivating and it seems that Margaret had written this story keeping herself also at the place of a reader. There is no point when you feel boredom about the situation. Secondly the story..!! A very intelligent way of telling history and reasons,outcomes and situations during the war. I personally enjoyed it a lot...and the third reason I liked about the novel was Scarlet...Well I have heard and also read somewhere that Scarlet is considered to be one of the most hated character in English Literature but my personal vote goes in her favor... About her the very first thing that amazes me is her passion..She never lost hope for the good times and her struggle was also so inspiring...Although she was selfish and acted like a mean at some points but the end showed what really she was and how level of soft heartiness she had....She was actually much emotional.The hero Butler was also very charming but at some parts he was so much of a Precognitive, but surely he had an eagle's eye...and the 3rd major character I liked was Mailenie..co humble,so caring,loving and sensitive.. The end was also good but I thought writer will satisfy Scarlet's struggle by a happy ending but the it was like ..to be continued..anyhow I liked it. It tells about hope and reasons behind living and a very fine reality.. Good Relationships and not Money that makes a satisfied happy living.... All in all a very memorable and lovable book..and its so much a surprise for me to know a person who loves novels and hasn't heard about this fine piece of literature..2 Thumbs up for the writer and I really wished she could stay longer to make our hearts even more fascinated by her first rate work...!!! ITS A MASTERPIECE!

I just weeded this book out of my bookshelves, after four years and moving it across the country and into (and out of) four separate apartments. I took it off the shelf, removed the bookmark that had been optimistically marking a quarter of the way through the book, and I put the book in my stack of books to be given away. I give up. I will never finish this book. The writing style is impenetrable and boring, which means that even though the premise of the book is fascinating--how form affects whether we like or hate an object, regardless of its function--I couldn't force my way through the prose to engage in the ideas. Disappointing.

Overall an excellent book. Can be a little redundant at times, but not annoyingly so. Author's Cut (special edition) includes more of the Carpathian language which I enjoy. A great start to an excellent series.
