Quite possibly the only Jane Austen novel I would ever read again without a gun to my head. ;)

From other reviews, I expected this book to be all about race. Of course, it was, but the focus was more on mother-daughter relationships than anything. The bee-keeping aspect of the book was fascinating, and the prose was gorgeous but at the same time seemed appropriate for a 13 and 14 year old girl. Her feelings were expressed beautifully in a fashion which was sometimes a little overwrought (which is probably appropriate for a girl of that age anyway, when everything feels like the end of the world). I really enjoyed all of the characters, and it was refreshing to have a happy ending after all the sadness within the book.

Overall a good book but difficult to follow as it jumps from present day to the past.

This author has seriously impressed me! I can't believe that I just found his books and I can't believe that I've read them all already. His two stand-alones and his series are so completely different from each other and from other fantasy books that I'm simply impressed. Very good series. The first, Mistborn is good, the second, Well of Ascension is great, and the third is very good with a slightly weird ending. Very clean, occasionally somewhat graphic in the violence, though in the realm of fantasy I'd rate his violence as low on the graphic scale compared to others. This world is basically a mix of haves and have nots, and the have nots are little more slaves. Some people have the ability to "burn" metals (they drink a powdered metal) which gives them abilities such as being able to pull a metal or push a metal or have more acute hearing or seeing, affect people's emotions, etc. Some very special mistborn can use all metals and have all abilities. Of course its written very realistically, there is a learning curve and you have to practice. If you have the ability to pull steel and you yank on a car, it's not going to come to you - you're going to go flying into it because you weigh less. Et Cetera. (this by the way has ruined X men for me because it's portrayed in such a practical manner that now it just doesn't make sense for Magnito to be able to lift a car with his ability) Add to those powers and peoples an evil ruler, hidden rebels that want to get rid of him, a band of thieves, and let the story begin!

Not the usual history we were taught in school (altho I really learned little true history there anyway. Basically a trivia book which reveals a lot of interesting quirks re: "things everybody knows to be true." Amazing how little we are taught in school.

one of the only sci-fi type books/authors I've ever really gotten into. I read all the books in this series by the time I started high school after having read "A Wrinkle in Time" for school. It's interesting stuff regarding time-travel, parallel times and places. . .life on other planets

When I read this book for the first time at the age of 11 years old, it changed me forever. In the theme of childhood trauma and coming of age tales, it'll remind you of Stand By Me (the movie - never read the story its based on - not a Stephen King fan).

This book was a bit disgusting for me. With affairs and stuff. But otherwise it was good. I've read many stories about amnesia and this is by far the best. Wondering what happened to her life, Lexi goes around in a blur trying to figure it out. Very fab.

Gore Vidal is one of those guys whose books I keep meaning to read but I just ended up with a couple of Vanity Fair articles. This is a collection of essays written after 9/11. I remember searching for this book for a while after I read "September 11, 2001", because he couldn't get them published in the States. So much for freedom of speech...
