Fabulous, wonderful, amazing, adventurous, fun, and engaging! I loved it! A great adventure/fairy tale (which almost never leaves the royal grounds!), a wonderful romance, and lovely characters. Entwined by Heather Dixon introduces us to Azalea and her ten (soon to be eleven) sisters, who all love to watch their mother dance as well as dance themselves. The girls spend their time before the grand Yuletide ball preparing their dilapidated castle and avoiding their father, the King. However, everything is thrown into chaos when Azalea’s mother dies; the entire household is forced into a year of mourning, which means the girls must wear all black, the shades in the castle are to be drawn so no light enters, and visits from guests and dancing are strictly forbidden. The girls give voice to their mourning by dancing secretly, but this is cut short when they are discovered dancing in the ballroom and are locked out. Desperate to dance, and thereby remember their mother as they loved her best, the girls search for a new place to dance and discover a secret passageway in the fireplace of their room. It leads to a magical pavilion in a silver forest, attended by a handsome, mysterious stranger known only as the Keeper. The Keeper allows the girls to enter his magical sanctuary each night to dance, but soon it becomes apparent that he wants something in return—something that will put their entire world in danger. It’s up to Azalea to protect her family, foil the Keeper’s devious plans, and learn how to guide her sisters in a world without their mother. I was first drawn to Entwined by the cover art—the silver leaves caught my attention—and when I skimmed the synopsis inside the book, I thought it was a retelling of a common fairy tale. It’s not, as far as I know, but that doesn’t make the story any less appealing or intriguing. I loved the description of the girls’ dresses and their dancing¬—it made me wish that I had a ball gown of my own and could join them. The characters were especially likeable, particularly the gentlemen callers and the King, whose character development was fascinating as the story progressed. I also loved the mystery of the story, and how the tension built as Keeper’s sinister intentions were slowly revealed, bit by bit. I enjoyed seeing the sisters interact with one another, and liked the concept of a financially responsible, though poor, royal family. I would definitely recommend Entwined to anyone who enjoys fairy tales; as I said, this isn’t a traditional fairy tale per se, but it definitely has the same feel to it. It would also appeal to adults and teens alike who love dancing, as well as those who like their adventure stories to have a little romance mixed in.
