This is a book written by a good friend of ours. We read it out loud to our kids and it kept all of them (except the 3 year old) engrossed. It's short enough that reading it doesn't become and chore and you don't forget how it all began before you finish.

هذه الرواية كُتبت بطريقة تجعل شخصيات أسرة السيد أحمد عبد الجواد تعيش معك كثيرًا، كل شخصية هنا تفوق نجيب محفوظ في تصوير سماتها وخصائصها، كأن الشخصيات حية أمامك عبر الصفحات ولا يخالجك شك أنها قصة واقعية حدثت بالفعل بسبب صدق الوصف وصدق التصوير النفسي للشخصيات وإنسيابية الأحداث .. وبيد أنها تتناول حياة أسرة مصرية في أوائل القرن الماضي وما قد يتسم رتم حياتها بالرتابة أحيانًا، إلا أن أحداث الرواية ليست عادية على الإطلاق، وتتخم بكثير من المواقف اللافتة للنظر، وكل ذلك أتى إليَّ وقرأته دون أن أشعر إنني أقفز قفزة كبيرة في حياة الأسرة، وإنما كانت هذه القفزات ببساطة هي التطور الطبيعي للأحداث! أعجبتني رواية الأسرة وأندمجت بها، وأتطلع قدما لقراءة الجزئين التاليين إن شاء الله ..

There's something about characters doing stuff on their own that can be fun to read about. I was kind of excited for that here, though a little disappointed that Taran wasn't really completely alone. Either Gurgi was there, or Flewdder, or both. Still, a good volume. Excited for the last one, I'm curious how things wrap up.

The Penderwicks took me back to 2nd grade when I fell in love with Little Women--I used to sneak a flashlight into bed with me and read it under the covers, and when my mother confiscated that, I read by the light of my fish tank. After just the first chapter, I wanted to read this book in exactly the same way. As with Little Women, I saw a little bit of myself as a child in each of the Penderwick girls. It was refreshing to read a book about children who aren't facing a tragedy or living in a dysfunctional home, and even the family dog is still alive and happy at the end of the story. The author proves that happy lives and good family relationships can be good reading. But while comparisons to Little Women are inevitable, the story is completely modern. I should have read this book when it first was published, but the upside is that I don't have to wait to read the sequels. I love this book and want to live next to this family!

Wow! Another intense read. Kellan and Keira did not disappoint. I can't wait to hear if this author is going to write a third book continuing this relationship. Again...I can't imagine being with Kellan after all his women...just saying. But, kudos to Keira who loves him despite his past, and to Kellan who showed his complete devotion to her!
