This historiacl fiction piece appealed to me becasue it is about the first female famous painter from Florence, Italy during the Renaissance. Since I am going to Italy this summer, I thought this would put me in the artsy mood and educate me at the same time. I really enjoyed the story of Artemisia Gentileschi and her struggle into the all male world of painters of this time period. Her struggle with balancing family and motherhood are still issues we face today centuries later.

harris' followup to the riddles of culture is more ambitious and daring, trying to explain the origins of things like capitalism, male dominance, even cannibalism, through an ecological-materialist lens. pretty far ahead of his time, and damn interesting. proved vital for my understanding of the world in which we live.

Williams-Sonoma get extra points for all of the lush photography that accompanies the recipes within this book. They're a little light on instructions, so if you're a novice canner, check out the Ball Blue Book of Canning first to get comfortable with the basic steps of canning before diving in. Also, they don't use commercial pectin in most of their jelly/jam recipes, so be prepared for longer cooking times. Otherwise, their recipes are geared to a somewhat more sophisticated palate (Meyer Lemon Jelly, Quince Preserves, Curried Yellow Tomato Chutney), so if you've graduated beyond basic strawberry jam, give this book a try!

Cassandra Clare has did it again...This lovely new series takes you back to the 1800 (I think) where if you've read The Mortal Instruments series, you'll meet their ancestors and the of course we can't forget Magnus Bane! Characters? The bomb! Jem is just soo sweet and had my heart melting in the first book as well as this one. Will was not really one of my favorite characters in the LAST book because of what he did to Tessa..but in this book he had me swooning every second he was on. Cassandra Clare portrayed another sweet yet charming side of him in this book and you could see the real Will. The one who doesn't hide. Tessa was cool. She's one of those characters you end up having a connection with. She wasn't super awesome but she wasn't boring either or made stupid mistakes either. I loved watching her and Will interact! The romance? The flame has been lit. As Will finds out the truth, he takes on the course to be with Tessa. But with Jem crushing on her, too, its hard for them not to hurt him. Tessa obviously is in love with Will but other issues comes in their ways. This book is way more heated and swoon worthy than the first and it has their moments. Gideon and Sophie!! *squeals* They're soooo cute together! But if Gideon hurts her..Gideon I'm gonna hurt you! (I'm sorry all you Team Jem fans! I'm probably being more biased towards Will.) I will say that Cassandra Clare isn't the best of writers when it deals with the romance but when it comes to secrets and twists, she's the one for you. The ending? Jaw dropping, heart-clenching, never-letting the book go, give-me-Clockwork Princess NOW kinda ending. Uh huh. I just went there. Soo if you haven't started this series..Please do yourselves a favor and pick up Clockwork Angel and start reading! You won't regret it!

SNAP: The World Unfolds by Michele Drier Maxmillia Gwenoch, aka Maxie, is the new managing editor of SNAP. After years of working in women's magazines, she's finally reached the top. SNAP is the name of a conglomeration of print magazine (with editions in five languages), blog, and television publications dedicated to celebrities. Maxie works out of the office in LA, but makes regular trips to Miami, Rio, and other glam locations to rub shoulders with The Beautiful People. She's being paid a remarkable amount of money for the job, more than she ever thought she'd make. She has a condo and a chauffeur. Finally: she has an assistant, Jazz, whom I would kill to have on my payroll (if I could afford her rate). The woman is wonderful: she arranges for Maxie’s furniture to be unpacked while she’s on the road, and dispatches personal shoppers to acquire suitable clothing in her boss’ size when Maxie is invited to the castle of SNAP’s owner. Did I mention that SNAP was owned by a Hungarian baron? Then there’s Jean-Louis, the art director. He’s frightfully handsome, and interested in Maxie, but our heroine’s mother always advised her never to get involved with someone prettier than she was. Still... With these blessings come problems. There’s the blood on the bathroom floor. There’s the unexplained quasi-hospital setup on one of the floors in her office building. Then, there’s the sudden attacks on Maxie. Someone is trying to kidnap her! She discovers that the Baron Kandesky and his family are vampires, and Carlos the Chauffeur is a demon who’s been engaged to protect her. That part is really cool, except for the Huszars, the vampires next door. They’ve been feuding with the Kandeskys for centuries, and they’ve teamed up with the local werewolves and wild boars. Yes, as in feral pigs. The Huszars would like to replace the Kandeskys as the vampire source of celebrity gossip. Along with smashing them into the dirt, of course. And they want Maxie… because good help is hard to find. This novella is a fast, fun read. I usually find the ‘life of the celebrity’ a turn-off, but it was very enjoyable here, seen through the eyes of a reporter who has to live part of what she’s been writing about all these years. Maxie is a go-getter who doesn’t give up when faced with challenges she has no preparation for. Plus, the notion that the Huszars want her for her skills is a twist I rarely see in romantic suspense. My only complaint is that the story is too short: it’s an origin story for a series character. Good news, though: the sequel is due out in 2012.

A little technically challenging to read for a non-horse person such as myself but Hillenbrand does a great job in explaining the lingo of the world of horse racing and training. A lot more detail than the Hollywood movie provided, this is a much fuller and richer depiction of the three men whose lives were entwinned by the horse known as Seabiscuit. An enjoyable summer read.

A short yet brilliant story which manages to capture the human condition in a repressive societal structure. I like how the author strips tragedy down to its bones; no dramatic declarations or hysteria, just simple, calm language describing powerful acts of violence and explosive displays of emotions. The characters didn't have any redeeming qualities as they were either really detached or they were the embodiment of certain vices but, this actually adds to the power of the book. The author doesn't allow you to sympathetize with any of them so you just sit back and watch the train hurl into the wall. Its almost as if McCullers wants you to feel as repressed and helpless as her characters. Like you recognize impending disaster but you can't do anything about it because you have nothing to reach out to.

Another classic read. This was not my cup of tea, but it was still a good book.

I started re-reading Invisible Cities yesterday, in a coffee shop where I spend more time than sociable. One of my friends asked me what I'm reading, and without thinking I said "Oh, it's my favorite book." Whoa. I've never said that before. But it is. And it felt right. And it feels right still. So I'm surprised that it's not on my list, yet. Maybe because I'm just not sure what to say. This is the book that I pick up when I'm sad. Or when I'm happy. Or when I need inspiration. Or when I'm drunk. For me it's the book that turns the screws because it doesn't have a plot, but it does have a story, and that doesn't make any sense if you think about it. So don't. They say that it can be read in many different ways - backwards, non-sequentially, or randomly - one page at a time. In this way, the book is a kaleidoscope. The pattern is there and undeniable, but fragile, and different in every instance of holding it up to the light.
