Some of the history lessons seemed like superfluous space-fillers (I already know about cuneiform from 3rd grade), but they were still interesting. I'm not quite sure he had a book here, but I guess they don't usually publish science philosophy novellas. His voice strikes a wonderful balance of prophetic warning without pretension or melodrama. "Search Memory," "A Thing Like Me," and "The Church of Google," were my favorite chapters. Interestingly, I read this book at the same time that I switched to a standing desk. Since standing is not as comfortable as plopping oneself into a desk chair, I find myself much more focused at my computer. Immediately it became a tool that sits on my shelf (my standing desk is actually the third shelf of a bookshelf) until I choose to use it. It forces me to be more deliberate with my computer, and I'm much less likely to follow baffling chains of hyperlinks to keep from working. It really has made my days more contemplative and peaceful. I've been reading more, too. Somehow that relates to The Shallows. The idea of this book is so pressing and vital that I'm inflicting it on my composition class for Monday. It makes me feel really good to know that 50 (wishful thinking, maybe) college first-years are going to give some thought to the extensions-of-ourselves that computers have become.

Enjoyable memoirs from Isabel Allende (I read the English translation, the sum of our days). These memoirs follow on from her initial memoir Paula, written to her daughter, who had tragically fallen into a coma. The Sum of our Days begins after Paula has passed away, and whilst it cannot have the heartrendering qualities of the first memoir, it nonetheless sparkles, with great humour and a "truth is stranger than fiction" storyline (even though some of the story had to be left out at the request of certain relatives). Formost among the characters is Allende hereself, now a matriarch ( who reminds me of my own late Grandmother, similary diminuitive and yet combative) and fiercely protective of her tribe. Allende comes across as warm, human, and honest, given to flights of spiritualism, and moments of self-doubt. Allende fans will get a chance to catch up again with many of the characters from Paula, and there are a whole host of weird and wonderful additions. Having read most of Allende's books, I was interested to discover that Zorro was the only one of her novels offered to her as a comission. I didnt enjoy Zorro as much as her other novels and perhaps this explains why! A final thanks to Pablo Neruda for pointing out to her what her true vocation would be!

Hard to rate this one - it was poorly written but still a page turner. I enjoyed it but am not sure I'd actually recommend it to anyone.

Complex with a lot of character depth. Told mostly from the POV of Rath and Jewel (Jay), the expositions are seamless. Great fantasy by a great writer.
