I went to a Samuel Delany reading in college. He's like the gay sci-fi Santa! GREAT reading voice.

It's science fiction for women. The author does such a great job of following through with the "rules" she develops for time traveling, whether we like them or not, and the story is really nice. I didn't have high hopes for this book, but it was captivating.

This book is Picoult's personal favourite of her novels, and I can see why. It embodies the main elements of her style which make them appealing to her readership. Having an appreciation for her style, and being a good sport about the daliances into chick lit or cheesy scifi territory, I found the story quite enjoyable. That said in the abstract, this is clearly not world rocking literature. The ghost story, in the historical and paranormal aspects, was very interesting and well done. I even learnt quite a bit from it. The present day romances though were admittedly pretty cheesy and convenient plotting; perhaps it's overfamiliarity with the writer's work that makes me cynical and sees ahead. For the conclusion itself; it's only fair to warn you. It's quite possibly the cheesiest most predictable conclusion of a 'love triangle' (or is it rhombus) you're likely to see in a long time. So I would recommend anyone of a cynical disposition either put the book down (you already know how it'll end), or brace yourself for a hefty shake of deus ex machina. Honestly though, if you're after a pleasant light uncomplicated read you can do a whole lot worse.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I felt connected with the characters and got a peak into what it was like to live during that time period. I would recommend it to all!

The book started with a very intriguing plot in which an organization of magic users realized that another planet/universe instigated certain events like world war II and global warming to watch how Earth's advancements and inventions will deal with these problems. However, after about halfway, the book got very tedious to read and I was tempted to just put it down: There was a lot of perspective switching and many subplots revolving around character interactions that were only superficially touched upon. In addition, explanations regarding the structure and mechanics of magic and the worlds got even more vague. The book seemed to lose focus but managed to tie itself together in the end. Although the many colorful characters didn't make the book a complete waste of time, I wouldn't pick up this book again. Perhaps it just wasn't to my taste and not what I look for when I pick up a fantasy.

The writing was great and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about some of my favorite authors, poets, and artists in the setting of their own time but I felt so defeated and sad towards the end. I knew what was coming and I know what Hemingway was like but I still couldn't extract myself enough from Hadley's pain to enjoy the last of the book. I suppose that means that McLain did a wonderful job with the book and I'm not arguing that but it touched too deep to a raw nerve for me.
