it entertained me in the way 'legally blond' may entertain you on a very long flight. otherwise... i know many people loved this book, and i don't mean to offend, but come on! "we need a number." "but he didn't give us a number!" "oh no, what will we do?" (after some time) "wait a minute!" "what? what is it?" "this just might be crazy enough to work!" "what?" "what if we try -- now get this -- the number he DID give us?" "genius!" although a scavenger hunt through european museums and churches sounds fun, i got as far as "a five letter word having to do with isaac newton. the clue is--" before steven shouted it out. 3/28/09 update (2 days after finishing): haha, i knew it. i watched the movie and i actually liked it better. i guess there's a first time for everything. the sir isaac newton clue was still idiotic in that it took so long to figure out, but otherwise it had to cut out or cut short a lot of the parts which drove me crazy. it's still alluding to history only for entertainment purposes, so it may have to reach, modify, exaggerate, or simply make up elements, but when you expect none, it's surprising what accuracy there is in the book. i still call it "ok" though, as in good enough if you have nothing else to do.

(Original pub date: 1984) This is another one of those "reading list classics" that I figured I should try. Especially since it's really short! ;) The book consists entirely of vignettes from the author's childhood in a poor section of Chicago. The writing is beautiful and spare - no vignette is longer that 2 or 3 pages (and the font is huge and widely spaced). It reads like poetry, really - the words are potent and evocative rather than exhaustively descriptive. My reading of this book actually had some unexpected bonus material. I picked my copy up at a library used book sale in Maine, and the previous owner appears to have been a slightly dim-witted 8th or 9th grader who felt obliged to write inane comments in all the margins. When the author describes her annoyance at a tag-along little sister who just doesn't get it, the margins shout, "Is Nenny retarded?" An odd neighbor gets the same treatment: "Is Ruthie retarded?" By the time we get to the author's lovely description of her own weakness and vulnerability, a comparison between her and the skinny trees in front of her house, we've graduated to, "Eating disorder??? Why is she so thin?" Sigh. Pop psychology has clearly killed future generations' ability to process art. RIP, intelligent thought.

I was really excited to read this book because of all the hype surrounding it. While the book itself was just ok, it did make me take a step back and rethink some of my parenting philosophies.

Kristy's Worst Idea is to break up the Baby-Sitters club. All the girls are busier and some of them have interpersonal conflicts, so they take a break. Of course, they all miss it and the parents in town go crazy, so of course, they get back together. Oops, did I spoil something? I just can't believe this is the hundreth book and they're all still 13 and in Eighth grade. I mean, come on. Also, this book takes place post-summer vacation, so shouldn't they be in 9th grade? Please? I started reading this series when I was in fourth grade. That was 1989. This book was published in 1996. Can they age a year?

great book... kind of strange, but I that's to be expected from Haruki Murakami. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone living in Japan.
