This is one of Montgomery's weirdest stories, and it's written in a specific style that I didn't particularly enjoy. Kilmeny also doesn't quite measure up to my standard of interesting heroine -- this is more along the lines of traditional literature of the time, and doesn't have much of Montgomery's trademark subversity and pre-feminist concepts... or even much of her sense of fun.

The second in the 'Inheritance' series ('Eragon' was the first), it continues the story of Eragon and his dragon Saphira as they learn what it is going to cst them to become the heroic 'Dragon Rider' of fame. Eragon succeeds in rescuing Arya, the mysterious elf who seems to be more than what she is letting on. After being welcomed by 'The Varden', a group of revolutionaries who are plotting to overthrow the wicked King Galbatorix, Eragon and Saphira have to battle the evil Urgal soldiers who try to destroy him, and all of the hopes of the Varden. Eragon is successful in battle, but realizes his limitations, and his need for more intense training if he is to battle Galbatorix. His trip to the elven city of Ellesmera, and the suprises that await him there are just a stepping stone to an epic battle that climaxes, and ends the book. The author grew considerably in storytelling with the second book - and has built an overwelming expectation for the third one.

Prepared to loathe this obligatory read, I instead fell in love with the saga of the eponymous town.

I have loved this book since the third grade. What drew me in is the context in which the author puts the Holocaust. The story starts with a young girl in modern times. She is complaining that she has to go to the Passover meal with her family. She thinks the traditions of her Jewish family are long and boring. However, during the feast, when they open the door to invite Elijah in, the girl is transported back in time to a day when her family is taken captive by the Nazis. The context made the Holocaust more real, more poignant for me. I have read this book many times and will definitely read it many more times.

I'm on a Thomas Hardy high right now! I finished this book the other night, and yesterday Roger and I went and saw the movie of Far from the Madding Crowd, which was so, so good! But fear not, I will not allow myself to get carried away into gushing, since this review is about Tess of the d'Urbervilles, and not Far from the Madding Crowd (which is my absolute favorite Hardy novel). While not my favorite, Tess is a great and very worthwhile read. It is set amongst the laborers (or, rather, labourers) of late 19th century rural England. It features beautiful writing, of course, interesting characters, deep themes, with fate seemingly in charge, leading our hapless characters to tragedy. Yet I wouldn't say it's completely hopeless at the end. It's just quintessential Hardy. A few more of my thoughts, which contain spoilers: (view spoiler)

I think Jane Austen is someone you don't appreciate until I'm older. Am I right?

I don't cook and I'll eat just about anything, but this book just about convinced me that my taste buds are truly missing out on something special. The smells and tastes are woven through the narrative as though the scents are drifting out of the pages. Lovely writing and a heartwarming story. Actually, it's several heartwarming stories woven into a heartwarming tale of bringing souls together to share all the diverse pieces of one another. A good, quick read.

I liked this much better than RESPONSE by the same author. Here we go back and forth between two basketball star buddies from high school, one white and the other black, getting each POV with each chapter change. The premise lies with a crime gone wrong in the beginning where both are involved but only one (black) is implicated. By the time circumstances catch up to white, his dad has hired a fancy lawyer and his fate does not hang in the balance to the same extent. Thus, Volponi explores issues of race and justice along with friendship and sport. There's also the issue of silence and betrayal -- if it means saving your own ass, do you spill the beans on your friend? Some profanity keeps this book edgy for the middle school crowd, with one killer episode in the middle that seems gratuitous and covers a crazy man spewing hatred and filth on the subway. Why? It makes a "judgment call" for 8th grade classroom libraries all the dicier when it didn't have to be that way. Anyway, for reluctant readers and sports fans, a winner.
