I was doubtful at first -- Armstrong seemed to be biased too much in the other way (i.e. going out of her way to portray Islam in a good light to counteract what she perceives as centuries of Western ignorance and prejudice). She spent a good chapter at first excoriating the West for its reprehensible attitude toward Islam. But then the biography got really good. You know, once it actually started. Armstrong's descriptions of life, traditions, and politics in 7th century Arabia are fascinating. Her narrative of the beginnings of Islam is quite compelling. And, of course, the characters are vivid: Muhammad, all of his wives (Khadija and Aisha were particularly interesting), Abu Bakr, Umar Uthman, Ali, and all of his enemies. It was an engrossing and informative read.

Nicely done first mystery, set in the days after the Spanish Civil War ended when tensions between Franco supporters and the vanquished Republicans were high enough for people to shoot first and ask questions later. Carlos Tejada, a member of the feared Guardia Civil must solve the murder of a friend. He gets a lot wrong but the pleasure of the novel turns on the moments when he gets it right.

writing style: 5/5 story line: 4.5/5 characters: 4/5 I have read quite a few of Crichton's sci-fi novels, but this book is much different. For one it's not sci-fi. Also, the characters are a little more fleshed out; more real seeming (unlike a sci-fi novel where the characters are relatively un-important). This is the story of a group of pirates (they call themselves Privateers) trying to steal a ship full of treasure from Matancerose(I probably didn't spell that right), a heavily armored island. in their journey they encounter several seemingly fatal mishaps, but they make it back to Port Royal in the end and... well, I'm not going to spoil the story, just go read it! Overall, Thumbs up.

I really enjoy Sara Bell's stories and The Manny comes in second only to Heart Song. What do I love about this little story? One sexy hunk with tattoos a plenty and a soft heart. The visual of Tate teaching A.J. how to swaddle a baby was sweet like candy. Another sexy hunk who's all yuppied out and also has a soft heart. A.J. wears cartoon boxers because they were a gift from his sibling's kid. Could he have stuffed them away somewhere? Yup. Does he? Nope, because then he wouldn't be A.J. Animosity becomes friendship become lust becomes love. An adorable baby. This is another one of those stories that I re-read like it's my job. I could have read 200 more pages about these guys and their little bundle of joy.
