Some great works, some a little clunky, but a good read. The title essay and the State Fair peice are the best. If you're new to David Foster Wallace, start with Consider the Lobster.

Hockey superstar Mark Bressler had it all, until a fateful crash took away his ability to get back on the ice. Drowning in self pity he has managed to alienate every home health nurse the Chinooks have sent his way, until he meets Chelsea Ross. Chelsea sitting on his front porch in a god awful mismatched outfit has made it clear his insults have left no impact. Not easily disuaded Mark decides to amp up the bad behavior trying to get her to quit, but Chelsea is determined to stay, for if she does she gets a bonus. As the two form a mismatched friendship and occassionally succumb to the electric chemistry both are wondering how they are going to manage one they are apart. I have been going through my books and trying to make sure I have a review for each one I read, and occasionally I find one that I wrote zilch. I enjoyed this the second time around, it is pretty funny and I think Chelsea is a wacky hoot. Mark tries so hard to throw her off but she just keeps her feelings to herself, well most of the time.

Reckless was amazing! Forced me to think about our world right now and the financial crisis we are in... could it be terrorism by Americans and outsiders. I have already lent out my copy and will be lending it out over and over. Well-written, great twists and turns, thought provoking, suspenseful, ... A ++++.

If you have been to Australia or will be going to Australia, you would probably enjoy this book. It has a lot of history interspersed with Bill's narrative about his travels around the country. I did not finish this book, but I did enjoy his book about the Applachian Trail - and finished that one.

I wish I would have read this when I was 12. The wordplay was a romping good time, but the adventure story itself...? Meh. And I really hated the illustrations. They did not live up to the world I created in my head.

The really interesting part of this book was the harsh critique it made on the conditions of living in Paris. Even though Empire of the Senseless was written in the 90's its description of Paris seemed to trace out the reports from Paris of the recent riots there with an eerily accurate voice. If Kathy Acker were still here, she would be saying "See, I told you so fuckhead."
