What happened in the end? Is there a sequel??

Really well-written book that keeps the pages turning. A really interesting twist on a relatively lightly-used plot device--protagonist suffering amnesia. Definitely worth reading if you've got a few days handy, or something to grab for vacation.

Our's has a different cover, so maybe it's another in the set. Each Bible Story is followed by a modern children's story about a group of reoccuring characters. It's a nice way to help preschool & young elementary kids apply the Bible story to daily living.

When he's not being preachy and annoying, Pullman is a very good storyteller. Steer clear of the His Dark Materials trilogy and try Clockwork instead. It's particularly good around Halloween for a bit of a fright!

I admit it. I am a pop-culture junkie... I watch reality TV, both the "high-brow" (is there really such a thing?!?!) and the totally trashy. Klosterman's book was a collection of witty essays about different aspects of pop-culture. I really enjoyed most of them... the ones about sports weren't quite my thing though.

Dense as anything. On the other hand, Carlyle in best humorous form. Narrated by an English editor trying to make sense of a German philosopher's "Philosophy of Clothes." Not for the faint of heart.

The Gate to Women's Country takes place in a post-apocolyptic society where men and women are segragated. The women live in walled villages and control the economy and education. Boys are raised in the women's community until they are 5 at which point they are sent to be raised and trained by the men. Most of the men are warriors and live in separate garrison cities. Some men however, at the age of 15, chose to dishonor themseleves and return through the gate to women's country to be servants for the women. A provocative read that raises the question of how the world might be different if it was ruled by women.

I wasn't impressed by this book. First of all, I did not like the main character at all. Also, I didn't feel like I learned anything new about Africa or it's people. Though the writing is in a very sparse style, the story could have been told in a few paragraphs. The ending was completely predictable. I'm not sure why people compare the writing to Hemingway because there isn't the depth that Hemingway is able to establish. The characters seemed to be flat stereotypical Africans.

Who said Shakespeare is the greatest writer? It has to be Jane Austen.
