Baskin's tale has a structure that in theory probably shouldn't work in a narrative this short ... but it does. Natalie is on the road, crossing the country to reunite with an unsuspecting mother. This story really is about how easy it is to blame yourself for another's persons choices. Natalie has become an expert at it, her question about chocolate chip cookies drove her mother away. Her boyfriend's lack of interest in her (with an exception to one thing) is because she's not interesting enough. Blah, blah, blah. In truth, Natalie is a bit of a sad sack. There is a lack of vitality about her but I pose that this is due to her parents and her boyfriend sucking it out of her. What is really striking about this book is the structure. As Natalie travels by bus towards her mother she meets many different people. Natalie's story is spliced with short vignettes from the other person's reflection on a time in their past. These stories always revolve around love - the joy, the disappointment, the yearning and the lust - but they never intrude upon Natalie's journey. Baskin has a lovely way of phrasing her thoughts. Some might consider them to be a little blunt but that's why I liked her style. One of Natalie's concerns (other than her meeting with her mother) is a pregnancy scare and Baskin's line of 'But no matter how hard I try, I cannot will my uterus into shedding it's lining' will definitely be too confronting for some but I got a great little laugh out of it. It appealed to the absurd in me. This won't be a read for everyone but I liked it nevertheless.

Great read, hard to describe without giving too much away. Suffice it to say this book is about a down on his luck private investigator, a spoiled socialite teenager and......It. Point of view switch half way through made for an interesting twist. Only negative is the rather abrupt ending. Looking forward to reading more by this author.

So after the first CD I decided that this book, due to its graphic content, is one of those books that I am going to have to forego in the interest of not fainting while driving or various other activities. *sigh* That being said, I love Erik Larson and bet this would be a fantastic read for the not-so-squeamish.

Horrifying and amazing. Lionel Shriver has a spectacular talent. I'll read anything of hers.

I would probably give this three and a half stars. The subject matter of the story is truly fascinating, and it lives out well through Mia Winchell in her personal life. Wendy Mass does an excellent job of balancing the narrative between telling readers interesting information about the condition of "Seeing" colors, and creating heartfelt empathy for the characters. I would have named this at least a Newbery Honor book for 2004, and I would think it mighty stiff competition for "The Tale of Despereaux" as Newbery Medal winner. Oh, and Zack is a lot of fun!!! :-)

Slash Slash HarperEntertainment Page# 480 ISBN:0061351423 Boos, Les pauls, and his top hat-- that as close as you get to Slash. This book is all about Slash, and his crazy journey called life, his career as a rock legend. this book describes every recorded moment of his history, and the band history as well. Working his way up, he came from a guitar center employee to a legend. His life was very typical, born in Hemptstead, London grew up with his parents until they divorced in the mid 70's, and he moved to America with his African- American mom. He met one of his future band members Steven Adler in middle school. He moved to L.A later on and met the rest of the band. Soon after creating the band, they were just another one of the L.A bands, looking for gigs and some sponsors. The first of there gigs were mostly cover songs, but as the underdogs of the L.A scene, they satisfied the needy punk rock fans. As they find their way through their career, song written about girl friends, crushes, such as Sweet Child O’ Mine, or Don’t Cry. This autobiography is written like a plain guy talking about his life. Theres nothing fancy in it, and its written simply. He doesnt use any writing skills or anything, just as if he were talking to an audience. Gun’s N roses were one of the best bands in the history of rock, and for any one who was a fan of Slash, this is a must read. This book is the biography of his whole career. Anyone interested in learning about a journey of a guitar legend should take a look, I’ve learned a lot from it.

I most recently read this book a couple months ago, but I've read it a few times, and could read it many more. It's beautiful and romantic and not at all chick-lit (though I'm down with that stuff too.)
