This book was too scientific for me. I had no idea how obsessed people are over orchid and how many varieties there are, but there were some chapters that were way too scientific for me and I had no interest in the book during those sections. I stopped reading it halfway through. Just had no interest in it.

this is an early J Picoult book, and it was refreshing to feel like it was something a bit different than her latest books. I liked the way it was written in more voices than she usually uses, and the time jumping i like too. It too some of the sting away from the events in the book.

I really, really struggled with this book. Now after finishing it, I feel like I read two books. The first half of this book was just bleak, and well...boring. It is tied down with narration of one hardship after the next to the point that it becomes numbing. The examination of each disappointment in the characters' lives just becomes meaningless after while and I felt myself feeling less and less sympathetic. The chapters feel excruciatingly long and go nowhere. Then it seems to abruptly change around the halfway mark. There are finally events happening and more of a plot, and the chapters get shorter and the story starts to flow more quickly - almost as if the author finally realized a couple hundred pages in that if she kept the previous pace, this book would end up being 2,000 pages long (which is seriously NOT an exaggeration!) Events are then crammed together at a steady pace, which is a welcome relief, even if a few parts seemed a bit rushed. The book ends with a sense of sweetness and hope that I truthfully did not detect in the first half. I can see why people are such fans of it. I am glad I made the effort to finish it, but I wish the first half hadn't been so laborious. This is a book that could have definitely been improved by editing.

Love this sequel to Labyrinth. The books take place in Lanquedoc, so I enjoy reading about places I know like Carcassone & the Aude. They flip back and forth between modern and medieval times. Always trying to figure out what is going on so I end up reading them in one day. The third comes out later this year.
