Loved it when I read it in high school and even more when I wasn't being forced to read it for pop quizzes.

Interesting arguments about the notion of necessity and malefics of religion, all of which you may not buy but most of which are hard to argue against.

I read this is in a day. It was just super easy to digest and fun to read, to the extent that I didn't want to put it down once I started. There were a few heavy hitting family drama kinds of moments, but for the most part, it was just pleasant a stroll through somebody else's life. I like that.

I read this knowing that it was fiction, but found the protagonist's struggle touching and shocking, nonetheless.

When i started the book a while back, i wrote: It is amazing how Aciman in these articles beautifully brings to paper the feelings of exile and nostalgia, the attempt to to calm oneself and find oneself around the world. and It is amazing how once again like in his novel i can identify with him. Now, after a long interval, I just finished the book and I am even more into him than before. I had almost forgotten how much i feel this man. How his words mean so much especially on these days: "I wanted everything to remain the same. Because this, too, is typical of people who have lost everything, including their roots or their ability to grow new ones... An exile is not just someone who has lost his home, he is someone who can't find another, who can't think of another. Some no longer even know what home means." I kind of want to declare that in this man, Bolano and Lawrence Durrell, come together over time and space and sit and write simple articles rather than complicated stories.

Lots of comparisons have been made between this book and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I can see that. I can see that in quite a few different places throughout the books. (At this point in time, I've read the first 3.) That doesn't negate the fact that it's a damned good book. Maerad is the voice of every girl who has felt left out, and wants to be special. Then, when she finally gets it, has no idea what to do with it. It's a very human reaction. Epic journey? Check. Orphaned and enslaved at an early age? Check. Hot teacher? Check. New take on magic? Check. Born instinctively knowing a language? Check. Intriguing personalities? Check. In short, this is the book I was looking for where so many had failed. I finished it inside 2 days, and this is no small novel. Highly recommended by the me.

This teeters between 3 and 4 for me, so I guess I would put it at 3 1/2 if I had that option. It is a bit lengthy, and you don't get a lot of explanation...but I'm finding out that Gaiman's work kinda leaves a lot to the reader to decide and imagine, which is kinda cool and frustrating at once. This delves into an interesting idea about what happens to the gods of Europe and other countries once they come to America as the beliefs of immigrants, and how they coexist with new gods. It is a very strange but enjoyable story about gods, legends, and beliefs.
