Good '50's SciFi from a classic author. This was a rollicking good adventure that probably contributed to the development of many of today's SciFi authors. It' kind of like reading an early episode of Star Trek.

This book was the best of the series so far for me. It was really good and intense. I loved reading Z and Bella's story. They were perfect for each other. They had a lot to overcome and the storyline kept me glued to the pages.

Let me start off by saying that I loved the other books by this duo, unfortunately, "Dash & Lily's Book of Dares" just didn't live up to my expectations. Surprising, considering that The Strand was a huge part of the story, as well as many literary references, but it just didn't quite get there as far as I'm concerned. Lily, for whatever reason, was not as likable as one would think, but that didn't stop me from hoping her young romance with Dash would bloom. Side characters were too obvious and overplayed in the parts they were forced into...leading to some uncomfortable moments I'm sure were suppose to come off as humorous. However, it was a quick and humorous read, and worth the few hours of reading (but just barely).

Ugh...so glad I finished this stupid book. Too much Swedish politics, not enough plot.

Interesting from a theoretical point of view, but its simple soap opera-like narrative makes it difficult to read. I only finished it because I had to present it to class.

I think Juliette Fay is a good writer, and I've enjoyed her other books (I think I've now read all of them.) But this is her first novel and it shows. The story could have been tightened up a lot. I also felt really let down by the Father Jake portion of the story -- it took up lots of time, went nowhere, and never really got resolved in my opinion (curious also that it was never mentioned at all in the book's promotional materials). Not terrible but also not worth 400+ pages.

I read this book after reading The Stand and, while it has the same apocalyptic feel as his earlier book (albeit in a microcosm), I found this to be a far less enjoyable read. In fact, I sped read some of the chapters and searched for excuses NOT to continue. It was only the persistence of a friend and her assurance that it's worth it that kept me going. Now, don't get me wrong, this tale of a small town and its inhabitants who, literally, in the middle of the day suddenly find themselves trapped under an impermeable and invisible dome is very well written. The plot is tight, the reason for the Dome, in King's world at least, is plausible and sad, and the characters are so astutely rendered. In fact, it is this last point that made reading the book so hard. While the heroes are heroic (what else!) and not always in the grand, sweeping way that heroes can be, it's the villains and, one in particular that both make this book stand out and make it an excruciating read. I would love to say that bullies like Big Jim Rennie don't exist but the truth is they do - and not just in small towns. It was the accuracy of his psychological make up and actions in specific and terrible circumstances and the passive complicity of his cronies (and even those who disapprove - the reasons they go along with him are given. While you loathe the rationale, you understand it - you just want them to be braver, bolder and stand up to the man), that make the read, frankly, tortuous in parts. Reading the book was like watching an accident unfold before you and being powerless to stop it. So, did I enjoy the book? Hell no. But, my friend was right: it was worth it.
