Incredible perspective on and by a great American hero. What an incredible story not just about a lone survivor but about what it means to be a Navy SEAL about brotherhood, and the honor and integrity in serving and protecting their country, its people and their way of life. And the surprising rescue found in the middle of a foreign enemy culture that adheres to the same set of values. Finally, I don't know how you write about this book and not say thank you. America is better and stronger because of Petty Officers Danny Dietz and Matthew Axelson, Lt. Michael Murphy and of course, Petty Officer Marcus Luttrell and all the men and women they serve alongside of, thank you.

Book Club Selection for September: The Wednesday Letters by Jason F. Wright For our November selection in 2010, we read Christmas Jars by this author (see my review here), which I liked quite well. The Wednesday Letters is pretty much in the same vein as Christmas Jars, and you can read a synopsis here. I did not enjoy The Wednesday Letters as much as I enjoyed Christmas Jars. I thought it was sappy just for the sake of being sappy. (You kind of expect this more from a Christmas book, which is why it was more forgiving in Christmas Jars). But, The Wednesday Letters did tell a story of forgiveness that was extraordinary. The way the main characters were able to forgive was incredible.

Just an amazing story, how an economics professor from Bangladesh, trained in the U.S., goes back to his country to do "nation-building" and finds enormous untapped potential among the poor. Harnesses a stripped-down, modified version of traditional banking to start a bank that eventually gains a client base of over 2 million people. That's nuts! How do you start anything that big? One person at a time, apparently - that's how he did it. At a certain point the book stops being a life story and starts being advice from a social entrepreneurship guru. So much the better! The man's ability to create not only a poverty alleviation strategy, but an organizational strategy that's met with so much success, is just mind-boggling to me. I guess I've just never seen a collective wave of altruistic behavior like the one he describes among his loan officers. I'd really like to see it. Does anyone know where I can find it? The closest thing I've seen is the way a friend of mine described his AmeriCorps program in the early 2000s, where he started a mentoring program for high school students that really took off. Anyways - I think building strong organizations like Grameen, that are really accountable to their clients and are there, day after day, not only exhorting but modeling truly admirable behavior, is absolutely key to the elimination of poverty worldwide. One-time interventions don't do it, and there has to be trust and accountability the whole way through. Not only that, but understanding and empathy.

was okay - 3 seperate stories that are confusing and have just a thin tiny thread of something to bring them together. They finally meet at the end, but by then I was confused and annoyed and didn't care anymore. Was suprised that this was a NY Times Best Seller. It was for my book club and did lead to an interesting discussion though.

i found this book to be terribly disappointing. it was disjointed and rambling. By the end of the book when something TERRIBLE happens and is never really addressed again, i was determined to finish the book when i should've thrown it down. It seems like Russell was sprinting to the end and never tied up all the loose ends she'd unraveled from this family's personal history i should've gator wrestled this book 1/3 into it and saved my time for a better book. one bonus though, i would love to explore the swamp lands......

Thought this book was well written. As always it took me awhile to get into this story by Swedish writers but half-way I was hooked and did guess the ending but still found it to be good. Great for those who like Tom Clancy type books. Fascinated by the way the Swedish govt runs prisons and they have problems just like us in the USA!

I loved this book. I pretty much love anything Jodi Piccoult writes. She always has twists to her stories. She also has a way of taking modern topics and putting them under a microscope. What you may have thought about that topic may change after reading her books due to her way of challenging our thinking.

I listened to this while running and walking with Stella, and it was absolutely perfect for that purpose: it kept me distracted from the agony of exercise and made me actually want to get out and get moving so that I could continue with the story. Is it the greatest book ever? No, but it's a fantastic story. I enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to downloading the next installment.
