This book was really wonderful. It gives a glimpse of what World War II might have been like through the eyes of Death, and through the eyes of a young German girl who was caught in the middle. Death is hilarious!

Paper Towns was certainly a compelling read, but a weak ending knocked it down from 4 stars to 3. Well, the ending was the final straw. The fourth use of Sentences. Like. This. Was. Probably. The. Deciding. Factor. Not since I Am the Messenger have I seen such overuse of this tactic. And. That's. Saying. Something. (Annoying, isn't it?) Other annoying bits were the detective's overuse of the moniker "kid," and John Green's apparent pride in his own cleverness in naming: Myrna Mountweazel the dog, who is always referred to as Myrna Mountweazel (never just Myrna, because we wouldn't want to lose the irony of the term mountweazel, now would we?), and the constant use of Margo Roth Spiegelman's full name, Margo Roth Spiegelman. I enjoyed the friendship and banter among Quentin, Ben, and Radar, and there were some downright hilarious moments, as well as some genuinely suspenseful moments. I couldn't bring myself to fully care about Margo though, or to really buy her motives. She could have redeemed herself for me there in those last few pages, but I guess it's just not in her nature.

I am not big on non-fiction books. I get bored so quickly by the who, where's, & whys. But this book was so great! I was so entertained and inspired by the Paul Newman & Hotch's story of being stand up guys in the messed up world of mass marketing food. I buy Paul Newman products as much as possible. They may not be the cheapest but I know they are always made with the best quality and care. The story of amazing selfless philanthropy with all the money made from their products is so inspiring.

I've read many climactic sequences in novels which have made me feel tense or anxious, but none which made me feel physically ill, as happened in this case: that long, intense rollercoaster of a buildup to a denouement, which, well. Let's just say that even though I finished the book hours ago, I still cannot think about it too closely--it's much too raw. I do not want to say too much about this, because I want many people to read this book, and I want them to do so unspoiled. Suffice to say that it was fiendishly well plotted. There were some parts which I called well in advance, but there were many more which just left me reeling--both from their unexpected nature, and from the impact they had on the characters. I can't wait to see where the series will go after this--where it can go--because wow. This is shooting right to the top of the list as one of the best books I have ever read

The doppelganger plot seemed highly improbable and the setting wasn't as fascinating as Afghanistan in the first book but GMF writes so well I can't bring myself to mind.

Hornby gets it. It being, in this case, what goes on in the head of a thirtyish middle-class bachelor, well intentioned but self-involved, lapsed from hipsterhood, and wrestling with responsibility, emotional openness, and the alchemy of dragging one's dreams into the waking world of being a grown-up. Using a commitment-phobic male narrative voice is a staid choice, but the book's issues center on that classic freudian dyad -- love and work -- and this bottom line makes Hornby's wry insights widely accessible. If the protagonist's own world included such a well tuned book, he'd likely hand out copies to women in a gesture of stunted, but nonetheless enlightening, personal communication.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book written in letter format. I expected to dislike the way it was written, assuming I would lose interest. I was pleasantly surprised to find I was pulled into the book and couldn't put it down once I started. I was dismayed to realize it was a novel. I thought it was non-fiction when I first heard of the book. I was hoping to go to Guernsey and find the descendants of the characters. It seemed so real. I feel as though I know all the characters.

I thought this book was entertaining. The writing style was interesting, but the story was a bit contrived. Not terrible, not great.

The reason I loved this book was because of the introduction of two of my favourite characters. Lupin and Sirius were too of my idols at age 10 when I first read this book. There was a certain family dynamic, love kind of feel that went on during this book that i really enjoyed.
