So far I am not enjoying this very much. If I didn't have to write a review I would not bother. Which is sad. I thought the premise was promising. But right now the main character irritates the ever living daylights out of me. She's everything that is annoying about middle schoolers and none of what is fun. We'll see. Maybe it can pull it all together in the end. Later ... I laughed in a couple of places. But it's not one I would have finished if I hadn't received an advance reader's copy with the request that I post a review.

I loved the premise of the story but the first half of the book was just slow moving and it was hard to grasp such a "big romance" from it. I really was intrigued with Shanghai and learning about this fascinating city in the 1920's and 1930's. The last half of the book picked up speed and held my interest. I'd say this was more of a 2 1/2 stars.

This is possibly the strangest book I ever read. I heard about it in a Zadie Smith NYT review that every book lover should work their way through at least once: http://www.nybooks.com/articles/22083 Anyway, the book is worth the read just to have the events described pop into your mind at the most random moments.

However, it is not until the story ends that you truly understand the gravity of this tale. It is only then that you are faced with a choice - in one path, belief, in the other, disbelief. Which you take depends on who you are and how you feel about Pi's story. And like Pi's journey, this is one decision you must make on your own. Either way, Life of Pi is still an amazing story to read.

This unique book offers children an introduction to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius as well as various other elements of Ignatian spirituality. Consisting of twelve guided meditations (complete with reflection questions) that cover key moments in the four weeks of the Exercises, "My Path to Heaven" is a great tool for helping children to deepen their relationship with God in an Ignatian spirit. The book is enhanced greatly by a series of lavish illustratiosn by Caryll Houselander, each of which bring to visual life such concepts as the Principle and Foundation, the Two Standards, and the Contemplation to Attain Love. I have used this book as the basis for a Ignatian-style Vacation Bible School as well as in youth ministry with middle school students, all to good effect. I have also made use of it for my own prayer and meditation, finding it in many ways to be more accessible and spiritually nourishing than many "adult" Ignatian resources. I would recommend this book to parents and religious educators, as well as to any adult who is willing to become a bit childlike in order to deepen their relationship with the Lord.

já vám nevím. Autorka hezky píše, v podstatě jsem se ani nenudila, občas něco bylo trochu vtipné, příběh byl až na malé výjimky ucelený a dával smysl. Tak v čem je problém? Tak zaprvé, sem tam se objevili chyby, logické, příběhové, prostě chyby. Ale to nebylo až zase tak strašně, i moc dobré knihy mají občas nějakou tu chybu. Co mi vadilo víc, byla neskutečně obrovská naivita autorky. Nemluvím o náboženském zaměření knihy, není to sice můj obvyklý žánr, ale kdyby to bylo jen to, kniha by byla pořád docela dobrá. Mám na mysli vztah hlavních hrdinů. To jako vážně? No, to mi asi vadilo nejvíc. Pokud jde o příběh a postavy, jsem ráda, že je kniha neuzavřená, počítá s pokračováním. Konec mi přišel trochu zmatený a hrdinové dobře popsaní, ale občas udělali nějakou tu blbost, která se k jejich osobnosti vůbec nehodila. Ale to pořád nebylo tak špatné, jen kdyby autorka nenapsala tak "směšný" vztah. Nevím, s Beth jsem se za celo knihu nedokázala ztotožnit. Podle mě chtěla spisovatelka jen napsat román o dokonalé lásce, andělovi a klasickém trojúhelníku, ale aby to nebylo jen to samé jako všechny podobné romány, domyslela si svět andělů a démonů. Ten ale ve výsledku působil navíc a ani trochu se tam nehodil. To je celé.
