This novel explodes from the very first page, and doesn't stop until the very end. That being said, the relentless action doesn't save a thin storyline. Nor do the mindless villains who have ample opportunity to dispose of the good guys, but don't. Anyway, the main idea of the book is that there is a secret hidden amongst the bones of the 3 Magi who came to see the Christ child upon his birth. The secret...well, I won't give it away, but it fizzles out by the time the protagonists discover it. This was no "DaVinci Code" when it comes to fantastic and unbelievably intriguing conclusions, but what it does offer is a fast paced read to bide your time until something a bit better comes along.

Had a profound influence on my life - like I made an actual major decision about my life based on my reaction to this book. I've since read it 2 more times, and it keeps improving. Only 4 out of 5 stars because I agree with another review from this site than Atwood's work can sometimes be so densely packed that it is unwieldy.

This was the first of the Royal Diaries that I read, and I do not think any of the subsequent books in the series ever bested it. Lasky's attempt to bring a young Elizabeth Tudor to life was masterfully done, showing the princess who loves to act like a child (playing games with her beloved friend, Robin Dudley, and younger brother, Edward), a young girl who longs desperately for her father's love (clinging tightly to any expression of affection), while also giving hints at the immensely clever woman she will one day be. Granted, some liberties are taken with history, but the story is so wonderful that it doesn't really matter. The book gives young readers an excellent look into Tudor England right where the action was happening, as well as a look at the years that helped to mold one girl into one of England's greatest monarchs.
