Clunky dialogue. J.R.R. Tolkein seems to have gotten carried away with making Aragorn heroic, to the point that every word out of his mouth is a Pronouncement. Indeed, the speech of many of the characters is overly stilted. And I don't like giant spiders...

summa shakespearia personally i find asimov's fiction to be a bit dry (almost brittle in style when compared to bradbury or vonnegut) and lacking the momentous revelations (on politics and religion) of frank herbert. a big exception would be his tremendous short story, "nightfall", perhaps the greatest of the genre. however, you have to give the man credit for both the breadth and volume of his writing, especially in the realm of non-fiction. as a professor of biochemistry, asimov expectedly churned out layman's science books ("understanding physics" is a fantastic calculus-free reference) and as a writer he had plenty to say about his favorite works of fiction. besides his annotated copies of don juan, paradise lost, gibert and sullivan, and gullivers travels, there is the bible-sized asimov's guide to the bible and this newly discovered (for me) gem, asimov's guide to shakespeare. asimov groups the plays together by setting (greek and roman, italian, english) and orders them chronologically (in terms of play's internal timelines, rather than the order of composition), commenting on key passages, allusions and important bits with clarity and wit. plus it's filled with maps and weighs about 1/2 as much as the infamous norton guide.

Not only am I going to reread this book immediately, I'm going to select stories for my students to read this year. While there are a handful of stories that are a bit uneven, they are still astonishing. "Post-modern fairy tales" is as good a tag for this book as I've seen, and yet that doesn't quite do this collection justice. I'm puzzled, surprised, delighted and annoyed by these stories, sometimes all at once. (The "annoyed" part comes from having to work out what some stories mean, which is another way of saying that perhaps I've gotten lazy when it comes to short stories, or I've gotten too used to hyper-realism in short fiction.) As a reader who enjoys fables and various modern attempts to write them (Isak Dinesen, for one), I thoroughly enjoy Ben Loory's book.
